Kindle PaperWhite - Yes or no?

Hey myBB'ers,

Any reason why I shouldn't buy my wife a Kindle PaperWhite 2014 3G from Takealot for R2999?

In other words, can anyone suggest a better deal? She already has an iPad so the tablet argument isn't relevant.

Be warned though, they're not vomit proof. Lost one on a boat cruise on the Adriatic recently... :p
 
The main reason not to buy this is that the WiFi only version is cheaper.

I find the PaperWhite to be nicer to read off than the competitors that I have tried and the built-in illumination is ideal for South African conditions.
 
I can understand if you're insistent on a kindle, but I picked up the Kobo Glo not so long ago and I absolutely love it. Just to be clear, I own a Kindle as well (not the paperwhite tho) so I'm coming from an unbiased viewpoint.

The Kobo Glo costs $129 and the Kindle Paperwhite costs $120 (both WiFi only versions), and yet you can pick up the Kobo Glo for R999 from Pick n Pay and the leather sleepcover ($45 overseas) for R99. It's an absolute steal.

Much of a muchness really..

Just in case you're worried, there are "special" ways to convert AZW files to EPUB files for free. You can just Google that. Essentially, you can get any book from the Kindle store and read it on your Kobo.

BTW, you're going to have to phone around to try find a Pick n Pay that sells the Kobos. I phoned quite a few before I found one that had. In saying that, you can request that they send a unit from a different store, to the one closest to you (assuming they don't already have them). I know that Pick n Pay in Greenstone (JHB) has them in stock.

Yes, because the new Kindle Voyage is out, although maybe not for shipping to SA just yet. Buying directly from Amazon is effortless and their service is superb.

You can price it on Amazon, incl. duties, BEFORE clicking on the Order button. They estimate the duties and refund you if you paid too much. I did this with the Kindle 3 Keyboard I order a few years ago, and didn't pay any extra when it arrived, but wasn't refunded anything either.

My Kindle is running just fine, but day-amn, the Voyage looks fine, heh. But see they don't ship it to SA just yet.

When Amazon ships the Kindle to you it's all in, nothing further, it just arrives at your door within literally a few days.

Yeah Bismuth, but it's a real upgrade from the Keyboard. If you are already on a PaperWhite, not so much. They normally ship here late Jan/Feb after US availability.

Any reason to pay the little extra at Amazon, bearing in mind that at Takealot I get ebucks back?

Nope, get it on Takealot, warranty will be easier.
 
I'd also suggest buying the wifi only version.

Every newish cellphone out there can create a wifi hotspot and you really only need it when buying new books so the 3G version is a waste of money imo.

I've got the 3G one and don't think I've moved more than 5mb total over that 3G connection.

Not necessarily - I recall Amazon sent out a new kindle to a forumite before even receiving back the broken one.

Both seem like decent choices - just go for whichever you like.

Where did you get the sleepcover? I couldn't find it anywhere.

Pick n pay in greenstone. They're selling it for R99 and yes, it's the official one. Bought it 2 weeks ago and they had quite a lot in stock so I'd be very surprised if they're sold out.

If you can't get to greenstone then you can arrange for your nearest pick n pay branch to have it sent to them from greenstone/another branch..

Thanks. No PnP close to me, but will see if I can make a plan. It's the one with the plastic clips right? Not the one with the bands that go over the reader.
