New portable devices offer an even bigger threat to the newish Kindle eBook reader. If Apple releases a Tablet, Antowan thinks the Kindle will die.

Kindle will die

I agree. Amazon was silly to use the model they have. They should have gone with a fully open model and made it compatible with every e-book type under the sun.

Unless the Tablet's price is cheaper than the Kindle I sort of doubt it...Mac is super expensive and I'd rather shell out 2k for a device than 10k+ lol

I think Antowan misses the point that the Kindle is an e-book but Apple's tablet is supposed to be an all-in-one device - a PC.

the Kindle was never meant to replace a PC, it was meant to replace a book. And because it does only that it will have far more battery life, less problems and be more stable than anything trying to be that plus more.

I see both these products selling equally well in their respective markets, I do not see them competing imho.

There are other e-book devices out there that are more open than a kindle. I'd avoid it with a 10 foot pole thankyou.

I doubt the Apple tablet will cannabilise the Kindle's sells in all but a very very small percentage.

The reason the Kindle is so popular is, in my opinion, the fact that its alot like the ipod/itunes thing.. there is a complete system for its use.... and it just works..

The Kindle is indeed a massive hit regarding sales. Digital book sales also look wonderful, but the price comparison on new devices will be key and if you can fork out a similar amount of cash for a full tablet pc vs the kindle, the tablet will win... Not necessarily the Apple... but we will see...

I seriously doubt we will ever see a full tablet PC for roughly $250....

Yes the DX is considerably more expensive.. but even then its nowhere near the $700 mark.. its like $450 I think.

Apple is but a click away from adding ebooks to iTS.

Without a doubt.. and if Apple add an ebook reader type device at the $250 mark... with decent pricing on the books they'll have a killer device on their hands.. but a tablet PC at $700-$1000 will be too much for alot of people to swallow if its just for reading books.

But it doesn't have to be for only reading books. :)

That is the thing. A PC is a multi use tool. If you buy a tablet, why buy the eBook only Kindle?

I realised that as I said it :).. (I'm not as stupid as I may sound sometimes)

And as much as a complete multipurpose device sounds awesome... for me, the big plus for the Kindle (and any ebook reader) is the e-ink screen... I spent 5 hours last night reading on it and my eyes didn't get sore, whereas they do after 5 hours on a normal LCD...

If the can make a device that has that type of screen in full colour that can handle video etc etc... they'll have a winner.. but a normal type of LCD screen won't work in an ebook reader in my opinion.

It will be the multi function device at a slightly higher than competitive price and, considering the months of iTablet speculation, it will sell big.
