Kindle

Whoa!

Why are these books so expensive?!

Paying that for an ebook is insane :/

Yeah those prices are a bit OTT, but I'd imagine the are "specialist" or niche type books where they can charge what they like (more likely the publicist, not Amazon's pricing).

Also don't be fooled by the $1.99 books, if you look around you will discover they are public domain books available for free download elsewhere, they are just charging you that for the privilege of delivering wirelessly to your Kindle.

One last thing about the browser ...

I see it's basic but I also see it's free?
I'm guessing its to browse only and download ebooks - no data?

I understand browsing is free - don't use mine for that. The browser is awful!
Books are not delivered via the browser.

You can only download any of the native formats that the Kindle supports, PDF's excluded.
Yes, it's crappy, but quite adequate for it's intended purpose, and that's about it.

Hey Dolby, just go do the deed, you won't be sorry, honestly it's an awesome investment.

Not supported, i.e. an opposition format, so naturally they won't allow it. Just run it through Calibre to convert to mobi, sorted.

And email your pdf's to your kindle and they magically appear - no human intervention - so much for not supported. What more do you want?

Tho its still better to convert the PDF to .mobi because the pdf does not have text flow.

To correct an impression in earlier posts: the Kindle browser, although slower than using a computer or a smartphone, is completely free to use for life. And in South Africa there are no restrictions other than not being able to access streaming audio or video or do downloads. I even have a colleague who does his web-based email on it! I often spend time between reading books on the Kindle, accessing the latest news sites, and even this forum.

You can also use the browser without any charge, ever, and without having to configure or register it, in any country where there is a Vodafone-associated operator, though not all countries offer the lack of restrictions we enjoy with it in SA.

I'd definitely suggest you go direct to Amazon as well, it's really quite painless.

Unlikely that it will be cheaper than buying direct from Amazon - and it is a very smooth process and takes only a couple of days.

Indeed, it was a smooth, painless process for me. Wasn't even an issue with UPS when I changed the delivery address from my home to my work address (of course the package had arrived in SA by then, if that mattered).

Every other supplier has to buy it from Amazon, and pay pretty much the same delivery and customs fees, so it will always be more expensive than buying direct.

The good thing about buying direct from Amazon is that their customer service is World Class. 2 friends who have had their Kindles fail on them have had them replaced within days by Amazon without any hassle.

Update to earlier information on this thread, to repeat what has already been noted in this forum: Amazon has withdrawn the 'free-3G-for-life' feature for the new Kindles (though they will still honour it for the lifetime of the Kindle 3, now called the Kindle Keyboard). The new Kindle 3G models will only allow free 3G to connect to Amazon or Wikipedia.

So if the free-3G is important to you (and it does work a treat in SA, through Vodacom, enabling you to browse any websites etc., but of course not to access streaming or do any downloads), then you need to get a Kindle 3 (aka Kindle Keyboard) rather than the Kindle 4 (aka Kindle or Kindle Touch).

@Terencek: I see it appears so, but you will still be able to purchase & download your books from Amazon on the Kindle 4, so that's not really an issue. I imagine that browsing won't be restricted if you connect to WiFi.

Even if it is, the Kindle is an ereader, if you want a tablet pc with 3g connectivity, get one that is dedicated to the task.

Rumours of Kindle retailing locally at Incredible Connection...pricing?

R1500 for basic kindle at Incredible.

Mine cost me R1300 including customs and delivery from Amazon about 3 weeks back.
