Knife edge

One of the scenarios in my mind is what the government will do when the real depression hits the USA and Europe soon. They'll be under tremendous pressure to competitively debase the Rand, enact import tariffs and increase exchange controls, which could lead to inflation and a vacuum of foreign investment. If this happens you can bet your ass they'll go wild with subsidies and price controls, which will fail of course, leading to a lot of civil unrest.

My only hope right now is that the Reserve Bank and the behind-the-scenes comptrollers of finance seem to be segregated from the ANC claque. Sure, they're part of the power elite, but I'd rather have those guys acting in their best interests over the politicos and stooges.

The definition of "knife edge" is that it could go either way. However, you have chosen to outline the one scenario and did not bother to mention the other possibility, i.e. that we are on the verge of something big, positive etc.

Thank god!
Finally some one with good news!

Pray tell....

I'll quote you in 3-5 years.

If we even still have Internet or electricity, I don't think so. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see whats happening to this country, it's not even happening slowly.

What is stopping them from killing us now? Do you really think they care if mandela is alive or not?

Exactly.
As an Afrikaans far right Boer, i cannot see how Mandela's death would cause wholsale slaughter of white people.

No one lives forever. People expects Mandela to die sooner or later from old age.

I doubt if it would come as a shock to anyone should Mandela go quietly in his sleep.

wholesale slaughter of white people.

Ha ha ha, can't wait, so bring it on. The cnuts could try but they have no idea what sort of hurt they will be in for. The "Cadres" have become soft, fat and lazy. Just feed them more alcohol. It's worked in the past :)

Realistically: 3-5 years till Zim 2.0
It's always good to have upgrades with new features, improved performance and fewer bugs. I'd be worried if they were going to launch the 1.0 version here. Definitely very buggy and rushed to market.

To be honest if there were ever a time/chance the country could have gone into chaos it was when Mbeki was forced to step down.

And nothing happened then.

No it's more of a downgrade to a unstable buggy program which will be in development hell forever, the new patches that come out will only make it worse, eventually leading to a over-bloated, unstable mess. Zim 2.0 upgrade now.

Thing is money, resources, skills it's all going to run out sometime. Who is to blame? Def not the ANC. Failing infrastructure, unstable food supply, dirty water. The things we put up with now will be minute, compared to what is to come. You have to blame someone? Maybe a minority?

So, I want to get the opinion of the locals at MyBB.

How much of a knife edge is South Africa on politically? In other words, how much action/inaction do you think it'll take for the country to descend into chaos?

With the recent striking against bad service delivery. The teachers striking. The toll roads, the increased fees for eskom from tomorrow.
A lot of people are unhappy..

What do you think?

If you recall the events surrounding the vegetable seller in Tunisia, you will understand that every revolution only needs the proverbial one last straw to break the camel's back .

Optimistically: 10 years left

Realistically: 3-5 years till Zim 2.0

I actually stayed in Egypt for a while and my dad lived there for 2 years... they have been on knifes edge for years now. Very different place to SA (The entire region)> it put SA's problems and corruption in perspective.... we have issues but nothing compared to the problems they have.

But looking at stories like the blue bulls player going ape crap.. And keeping in mind the corruption uncovered daily. And now the story with the DA and blacks being tokens.. It adds up.
No it doesn't add up. The guy who committed those murders is quite likely mentally disturbed. I don't really know how the corruption levels here compare to other countries. And that story about the DA looked like nothing more than a racist ANC supporter whinging.

What do you think?

I'm not concerned about a possible civil unrest situation.

I am concerned about service delivery, job creation and the increase in the basic cost of basic living eg the rising price of electricity & petrol, which will lead to general price increase on goods and food.

I am extremely concerned about corruption and fraud in all spheres of government, it has also become increasingly difficult to trust the police, because of widespread corruption and criminal activities of police force members.

I am also concerned about the generally low level of education and poor matriculation results coming from a majority of local schools.

Government has failed the people of South Africa, there are too many fat cats, too little long term planning, too much ineptitude, and a general lack of progressiveness.

I foresee the poverty sector growing, and service delivery to the poorest in the country remaining backlogged.

The country is a haven for fraudsters, criminals, scammers along with government officials who take bribes, the crime level in the country remain horrifying, especially rape and malicious crime.

IT was suppose to be a joke. :o
I tried some comic relief..:o hence the smileys. :( I will not be funny again sorry.
You said upgrades are better. Zim 2 should be better as zim one. If Upgrades are always up.
I was just poking fun at you. Seriously. :o

Just to add. I do not think SA is a Zim 2.
I think we are writing our own history.

It is 1 April. I'm not taking anything seriously today. :)
