Knysna WiFi system kicks off

Proof that moving away from Telkom creates jobs, lowers telecom costs and expands the SA IT sector.

Well done!

In terms of the deal between Knysna and Uninet, the wireless installer will set up 13 base stations and sell the data and voice over Internet Protocol services to the residents of the Knysna municipal area. As more people subscribe to the Internet connection service, either for home or office use, each station connected also becomes a mini-base station extending coverage.

This has to be the future!

Knysna's Easton says he is disappointed that neither Telkom nor the GSM service providers have decided to get involved in the project.

Yup - too good on the gravy train.

"They must realise that this is a social development project. It will not only help our poorest people, but it will attract businesses to Knysna," he says.

Whoa - help the poorest? Attract business? Not according to telkom.

Had a word with my step mom who heads up one of the local Ratepayers Associations in the Greater Knysna area.
She isn't too clued up with modern technology etc, but told me yesterday that the Knysna Municipality or most likely the Contractor, Uninet have installed 15 free telephones in the previously disadvantaged areas. These phones may dial anywhere within the 044 area, which stretches from Mossel Bay to Plettenberg Bay for free.
And all the schools in the area now have 24/7 free internet.

She went on further to say that the Knysna Municipality did an enormous amount of scoping and investigation into the Telecommunication Act before they even brought the proposed plan to the Ratepayers. During the process that followed they apparently invited Telkom to these meetings, but Telkom declined.
Knysna's Easton says he is disappointed that neither Telkom nor the GSM service providers have decided to get involved in the project.
Only later at the advanced stage did Telkom send a threatening legal letter to the Knysna Municipality to obviously halt the implementation of the Wireless Service, at which stage the Knysna Municipality apparently told them to sod off as they had been invited at an earlier stage, but declined.

I think Grant Easton and Dave Daniels of the Knysna Municipality need a blooming medal.
I hope every Municipality around the county takes note of what these men have achieved.

Typically telkom at its worst - and no better side.

Amazing. The type of thing that needs to be widely reported! How to stick it to telkom. :D

:) :)

add mayoress joy cole to the list of those to be applauded...this project will start to deliver some startling things in the near future

love it :) :)

I am so surprised that Telkom, Proudly South African founder, and a leader in social upliftment (let us not even begin discussing their commitment to the economic growth of SA in general), would not be supportive of this. Free internet for schools, free calls for the poor - how can a PSA founder even think of opposing this?

NOT.

Yes of course. The Major.
I can speak to my step mom again as I am sure there are many more people on that list that need to be applauded.
I really think that the Knysna people are innovative and have vision.
They are also going to be saving the Ratepayers of the Greater Knysna area a lot of money in the long run from what I hear.
From what I have heard the brainchild behind the project was Grant Easton.
I have met Mr Easton once in my life at an IDP(Integrated Development Plan) meeting in Cape Town in about 2000/2001. He was the City of Cape Town's Financial man.
At the time I was greatly impressed by his speech and wisdom. Actually I have not met any official since that date that has impressed me as much as he did. He of course resigned from Cape Town at the integration of the Unicity in Cape Town.
I have been told that he and Dave Daniels did not want to be part of the mammoth stuff up of what was to become the Unicity of Cape Town and wanted their obvious talents channelled in a more productive Municipality.

and a very senior official at the DoC has recognised what is happening and referred to the project as being "commendable"

ah hope springs eternal

This is a truly amazing project. I wonder what Poison Ivy has to say about it... speaking of the minister, is she still alive???

Hmmm, would being dead make P.I. more or less effective. One wonders.

She is probably at her holiday home in Knysna :)

Well short of someone organising a séance she wouldn't be able to talk once dead, which could only be a good thing.

Sorry to go Off Topic, but dig the quote in your sig.

I stll maintain the idea that whoever is elected as the next MoC, they will do a far better job than Poison Ivy. Seriously, it doesn't get much worse than what this woman has done (or NOT done???) to this sector.

I hope "Peter the Plank" is still interested in the position.

Don't forget the Sangomas (sic?) She probably already gets all her guidance from the ancesters, once dead they would just appoint the sangoma as the DoC spokesperson.
