KODI vs PLEX

Why watch TV when you are taking a dump or on holiday? If you really do have to watch whatever you must when on holiday then just mark what you watched when you get home. Or as I do, delete it.

I use both kodi and plex. I run the plex server on my wd nas and I use kodi as a front end. I downloaded the plex addon for kodi. Kodi is installed on my media player.

LMAO - that was way back in 2015. Now I have 1 PC in my house - my PC - it has all the storage and I have a Pi3 on my 50" TV while my 4 year old has a Pi2 on her 19" TV. Both Pi builds run OSMC (Kodi).

Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.

OK, questions for those running the Kodi /SMB method.

1.) How does Kodi update it's database? Does it scan the entire library each time you start it up?

2.) Ever start Kodi and find that recently added content is not showing up unless you manually refresh a folder?

3.) Ever get the message that content is "no longer available" because the file was deleted or the name changed?

Both actions are manual. No thanks...

Also don't want to delete cause multi user setup means other people also watch the content, and no guarantee they have watched already. I prefer to do a purge every 2 years or so to free up space.

I run plex on a Dell Power Edge server. Streams to 4 rokus around the house and a htpc in the cinema. Works like a bomb. Never tried kodi. But plex rocks.

Why you got a HTPC in the cinema? I have a similar setup as yours (4 Roku's dotted around the house), but the 5th is in the cinema. Used to have a HTPC in my cinema (pre Roku days), but replaced it with a Roku.

Short version... Just curious what you do with the HTPC that the Roku can't.

From what I understand is the roku cannot play HD audio. With the HTPC you get direct playback of any content whether it's bluray rips or another lossless source. So I guess it depends on what your source media is.

Besides that though. Having a fully operational PC in the cinema comes in handy. If I ever have to access the server or refresh the library's for content I added. YouTube. Games. Whatever else is needed.

Fair enough. Thanks for taking the time to elaborate.

Not 100% sure, but i think you can set the Roku to direct play everything.

Roku (officially) supports playback up to 20mbps. So it depends on the source media. If you're playing a 50gig bluray rip plex is going to have to transcode it down to be able to play on the roku. Whereas a HTPC will be able to play it without transcoding.

A quick Google seems to show no Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio only gets used as DTS Core.

Questions ignored. I guess that answers them then :)

Kodi updates it's database. That is all that matters. When I add a new file to a directory it is just there. When I delete it, then it is gone.

Kodi is about watching content, and not about getting hardons about what kind of SQL queries are done in the background.
