Koeberg repairs to take weeks

Yet another fine piece of technology gone to pot in the wrong hands.

Meanwhile, the Majuba and Duvha power stations in Mpumalanga had technical failures on Wednesday.

*sigh* Will it never end? Where is the maintenance?

Yes the mentality drops because did you know they cannot stand the cold. They hate airconditioners and love heaters, even in summer!

Anyhow I will see if I can find out what the story is behind this BS

From Eskom : On Monday, 21st July following a fault with the hydrogen cooling system in the Unit 2 generator at Koeberg, Eskom initiated a controlled shutdown of the unit (900 MW generating capacity) around 19h00. The nuclear reactor side of the unit has not been affected. Due to stringent safety requirements of the shutting down procedure, repairs and restarting procedure will take about three weeks to complete. Specialists from Alstom, the original equipment manufacturer, which recently undertook work on the generator, are already on site to assist with the inspection, diagnosis of the problem and the repair work that will be required.

We unfortunately could not anticipate the last few weeks of lower temperatures and adverse weather conditions. Eishkom is doing everything in its power to account for this.

These stories are always posted like breaking news and get the same reactions each time but this is the exact problem that has always been present! We do not have enough reserves to maintain the demand when maintenance/breakdown issues arise. Unexpected breakdowns and maintenance are always necessary. Enough reserves would mean we would not even be aware of these.

I feel a double whammy is that for a lot of people the novelty of saving electricity has worn off and people are back to using as much as possible... we knew all along that we'd have a problem until at least 2013... stories like this are going to be with us every few months until then!

What was that? We could not anticipate this "Winter" phenomenon as a regular occurrence. As such there will be load shedding. We don't anticipate any further problems after this "Winter" phenomenon is ended; unless aforementioned phenomenon is succeeded by a warmer "Summer" phenomenon. However, past evidence indicates this is highly unlikely. :D

And people still use electric heaters in this day and age... I have never owned an electric heater... I use gas but now that they're profiteering on gas also, it is a problem for the poor.

There is a solution which is even cheaper....

...still too expensive? Well then...

But of course it is so much easier to switch the heater on and then b!tch when we get load shedding!

One wonders what Service Agreement Eskom has with companies like Alstom?

A helluva lot of maintenance goes on at Koeberg. Just in January Unit 2 (maybe unit 1 - not sure) was off for 2 months or more for maintenance.

Going back to the late 70's and 80's my brother used to work for a Company that inspected the piping at Koeberg. Turns out one Company welded stainless steel pipes with normal welding rods.
Another person mentioned they found a whole ladder in one of the cooling pipes.

Anyway let's hope things get sorted. So far no Load Shedding. Perhaps people have seen their latest Electricity Bill and are cutting back?

No loadshedding = Yes
Faults = Yes and lots of them... power flicks and other anomalies

Eskom have F***ed up my poor DVD recorder with their BS!!!!

Both units at koeberg out! Wow that does not sound good at all.

So all Cape Towns power is coming from upcountry! Those lines must be taking serious strain. At least with the bolt episode there was still 1 unit running and the power could be shared around.

Wait for that major sub in Beaufort-West to let go - forget load shedding, there'll be nothing to shed.

That place is a ticking time bomb, just glad I live more than a 1000km's from it ;)

That thing is being run by idiots, controled by idiots and will explode at the hands of idiots. We will have our own little Nuclear waste land just like they do in Europe. Guys if anyone of you live near there, Sell and move :)
