I believe in giving even the devil his due.

I called them yesterday afternoon @ 16:00 to request an upgrade from 384k to 1024k; Telkom representative just called to say that it's done and that I must check my line speed.

I'm at work at the moment but I can't wait to get home to check it out; anything faster than 384k is better. Besides 4mb is out of my affordability range and with the line-synching issues I've had recently, I wouldn't chance taking a 4-meg line.

Side-note: Was told that my exchange supports up to 4-megs - this is in a lower to middle income area, where most people are on a 384k line.

Let us know if it has happened, I don't think it takes much for Telkom to upgrade a line. I've had them do it while on the phone with them.

most likely the exchange is already 4mb or 10mb capable, all they have to do, is change the sync speed for your port.

I had similar experience the other day when my connection went down. They fixed it. Called me to confirm all was in order. And then sent me a SMS to confirm same.

Now if only they were so proactive with pricing and LLU.

/sigh

Me and my colleague actually had it that Telkom upgraded our lines from 384kbps to 4Mbps on the same day even.

I've also been lucky enough to gotten through to a lady at the Call Center who changed my line speed from 2Mbps to 4Mbps while I was on the line, which really impressed me.

the thing is faster they change your line the faster they can charge you for the higher speeds :P

I don't think it takes much to upgrade the speed if the exchange support 4mb already, maybe a click or a simple flip of a switch. Anyway I am upgrading to 4mb line rental by the end of the month and hopefully I will receive the same speedy service.

Yes, normally they can upgrade you while you are on the line. A downgrade takes 6 to 10 weeks and another 6 months to sort the billing out. :)

My downgrade from 4Mbps to 1Mbps was sorted out in 1 day, and even the billing was correctly done on pro-rata terms!

Telkom was good to me recently too - they gave me a new router after I thought mine was "faulty", turns out mine was not so faulty after all. Anyways, now I have a shiny new router.

What the EF!!! I have a complete package with WebAfrica, and aksed them to upgrade my line to a 1Meg over a week ago. Still nothing!!!!! My exchange is 4Mb capable according to Telkoms online speed and availability tester.

WTF! WebAfrica say it'll take 7-21days!!! In the mean tmie, I'm pretty sure I'm getting billed for it!

that's normal if go though a isp, mine took a week with mweb, though I did not get billed until it was active with mweb.

I recently applied for an analogue line which will be followed by an application for 10Mbps ADSL (Why this cannot be ordered at the same time is above me. Apparently it's only available when you're not doing a self install). I'm on one of the larger exchanges in the country I'm told, with 545 ports available. It's going to take almost another month until they get the analogue line in. It's a long wait!

Sorry, my smiley was to indicate that I was joking. Never done a downgrade. Have taken 6 months to sort out billing, though.

Say what's the line rental on a 1meg line? Can't seem to find anything on their website.

Never mind. Figured it out. Forgot they ditched 512 for 1024 and dropped the rental. Will give their 3 month trial a shot and take it from there.

This 3-month trial came a tad late; could've done with that. :(
