KZN facing worst drought since 1982

Water restriction remain despite heavy rains

DURBAN - Water restrictions will still remain in effect in the Durban area, despite several dams reaching 100% capacity in KwaZulu-Natal following a three day torrential downpour.

The heavy rains came after a cold front passed over much of South Africa on Friday.

Shami Harichunder, spokesman for Umgeni Water, which supplied bulk water to several municipalities across KZN said they were concerned about the consistently low level of Albert Falls dam, which is the largest dam in the Umgeni Water operational area.

"This dam is dependent, in part, on Midmar to rise sharply. Midmar has to overflow for the level of Albert Falls to increase or there has to be significant amounts of rainfall in its catchment,” Harichunder said.

Areas that receive their water from the Mgeni system are currently under 15% water restrictions. These areas are uMgungundlovu, Pietermaritzburg and Durban (except Verulam, Waterloo, Sea Tides and Tongaat) and these restrictions will remain until the situation improves.

Harichunder said: “Water restrictions are always accompanied by a degree of hardship. But they are necessary to make limited water resources last until the next good rains. In the case of Mgeni system, the restrictions were applied to prevent failure of Midmar and Albert Falls. This could have occurred in May and November 2018 had we not adopted the strategy of water-use curtailment. The need to conserve water still remains.”

I think that is the right move by umgeni water if you ask me... rather keep them in place until we are out of trouble properly

Jip agreed.
Seems the municipality has had planning problems.
Water restrictions should have been implemented when the dams reached 60% and they saw that there is now rain coming on the horizon.
All let to bad planning and no money spent on improving the infrastructure, making dam walls higher, scraping dams etc.
Seems the mentality is, when one opens the tap, water comes out and that is good enough

God those things are awful, been the cause of destruction in my property a number of times after heavy rain.
 
Had a immense downpour in Ballito this morning. Could barely see in front of you.
Still pitch dark at 6:40 this morning

Was clearing up in the Pines when I left for work this morning... get into Durban and its absolutely dark and pissing cats, dogs and cows all at once.

Regardless of how good your builder is, there is only so much rain a house can handle before it leaks... I have 6 leaks that I know about atm, 2 are relatively easy fixes with membrane and stuff, the other 4 I don't even have a clue how I'm going to fix them, I think the valleys in my roof just couldn't cope with the water :(
 
If you have a leaky parapet wall then skip the membrane. With the Durban sunshine and rain it will only last a year. Rather use a product called Flashband. It's an aluminium-bitumen tape and then go over it with the Sika stuff that has the membrane fibres in the paint mixture.

Nah, no parapet walls... I no likes flat roof nonsense, will never ever ever ever buy a house with a flat roof type setup.
