I am always one that thinks outside the box - today I found myself at a vending machine, with no change....

Then had this idea : why not be able to pay for the drink with your cellphone?? The vending machine is connected to the net, your cellphone is sending your details, via bluetooth --advising vending machines what your preference is, Coke,Fanta,Wine Gums, Jelly Beans....vending enquires whether you want a Coke, confirms that this will be billed to your cell account, and Bob's your uncle.....you have your coldrink- - - - - no change needed,:p just a thought....

Like they reportedly do in japan?

As bwana said in japan...
And its not as hard as you set it out to be, just a swipe of the caellphone on a sensor....

No swiping needed, the RFID tag in the phone will have a range of a meter or so.

A SIM in the vending machine will also allow the vending operator to be alerted before the machines runs out of drinks / tickets / etc.

Parking meters; one of my top-of-the-list applications.

Noddy price for the best suggested application for this technology!

Didn't they say the Nokia 7110 could be used for payments or something a few yeasr ago?

Saw an article about this somewhere but can't remember where now, they were talking about putting the RFID tag in the sim rather than the phone?

Parking meters is definitely a good use, hopefully eventually they'll get around to putting RFID tags on everything in shops, should be much better than barcodes.

MTN had a colddrink vending machine in their canteen about 7 years ago that charged to your cellphone acount.

Probably didn't have a business case to get it out there...
