Need more grunt? ABT hands Lamborghini Urus a power upgrade

ABT Sportsline has become a leading tuner of Volkswagen Group vehicles, with a special focus on the VW and Audi brands. Now, however, the German tuner has got its hands on a product from the Lamborghini subsidiary, launching a new tuning package for the Urus.

The tuner has fitted its engine control unit to the SUV’s twin-turbo 4,0-litre V8, pushing its peak outputs from the stock 475 kW and 850 N.m of torque to an even healthier 522 kW and 910 N.m. This gives the heavyweight a claimed 0-100 km/h time of 3,4 seconds, some two-tenths quicker than the Italian firm's claim.

Abt Increases The Lamborghini Urus’ Power Output To 700 HP (522 KW)

The Lamborghini Urus is a very powerful car. Considering that it is a SUV that carries more power than many supercars, it will out sprint most sports cars. But, as always, there are always those who think an already powerful car can do with a few more ponies under the bonnet. Cue the German tuning manufacturer, Abt.

The standard Urus pushes out 641 horsepower (478 kW) and 850 Nm of torque. But when Abt gets their hands on one, the twin-turbo, 4.0-litre V8 produces a sizeable 700 HP (522 kW) and 910 Nm of torque. This is made possible thanks to Abt’s performance kit and “Abt Engine Control”.

All about the Urus? Lamborghini doubles sales in first half of 2019!

Lamborghini says it delivered 4 553 vehicles to customers around the world in the first half of 2019, representing a whopping 96 percent increase on the same period in 2018.

For the sake of comparison, that figure surpasses the Italian firm’s full year sales numbers of 2017 and comes after 2018 sales figures grew by 51 percent.

Of course, the Urus was the driving force behind Lamborghini’s latest sales growth spurt, with 2 693 units of the SUV registered in the first six months of 2019. Meanwhile, the Huracán accounted for 1 211 units, including deliveries during the Huracán Performante’s run-out period and the introduction of the Huracán Evo. And some 649 units of the V12-powered Aventador were sold, too.

Lamborghini says its largest single market for the reporting period was again the United States, followed by Greater China and the United Kingdom, Japan and Germany.

More than half of Lamborghinis sold are Urus SUVs

Controversy erupted among fans when Porsche first launched its Cayenne, but the SUV has since become a cash cow for the German sports car specialist, and now the same thing appears to be happening in the Lamborghini stable of the VW empire.

Lamborghini managed to increase its worldwide sales by 96 percent in the first half of 2019, versus the same period last year. This growth was largely driven by the Urus, which accounted for 2693 of the 4553 cars that the Italian marque sold during that period. This was a record figure for Lamborghini, even surpassing the total tally for the whole of 2017.

The Huracán was the company’s most popular supercar during the first half of 2019, with 1211 sales, while the Aventador accounted for 649 sales.

Lamborghini’s largest market is still the USA, followed by China, the UK, Japan and Germany, while the American region saw the strongest growth, at 128 percent, followed by Asia Pacific.

Lamborghini Urus gets wide body kit and 597kW

Few would accuse Lamborghini’s first SUV of lacking potency or visual drama for that matter, but now the folks at German tuner DMC have rolled up their sleeves to give the Urus a more arresting ‘wide body’ styling package as well as a useful performance upgrade.

Meet the DMC-X.

The SUV has been given an ECU tune that results in a very decent power hike, with the company claiming a power output of 597kW, up from the standard car’s 478kW, while maximum torque has increased from 850Nm to a wholesome 914Nm.

As a result, the DMC-X is three tenths of a second quicker off the mark, with DMC claiming a 0-100km/h time of 3.3 seconds.

The tuner has also developed a new lightweight performance exhaust system for the Urus.

There is no mistaking it for a ‘regular’ Urus out on the street, thanks to a styling package with flared wheel arches that widen the vehicle by 120mm. The arches are made from AirCell, an aviation material that mostly consists of air, despite it being extremely strong.

Clients can also opt for a carbon fibre bonnet that’s been reimagined with two vents, as well as a boot spoiler.

Lamborghini Urus handed more power (575 kW!) and menacing bodykit

German tuner Novitec has unveiled its take on the Lamborghini Urus, handing the Raging Bull brand’s first-ever crossover a menacing bodykit and a performance injection.

Some 478 kW and 850 N.m are produced by the standard 4,0-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine, directed to both the front and rear axles via an eight-speed automatic transmission. But the folks over at the Stetton-based company have developed a performance package to enhance the outputs to a whopping 575 kW and 1 032 N.m of torque; on tap from 6 200 r/min and 2 900 r/min, respectively.

Thanks to the firm’s N-tronic tuning modules (plus remapping of the injection, boost pressure control and ignition), Novitec says the modified Urus sprints to 100 km/h from standstill in a mere 3,3 seconds (three tenths of a second quicker than the standard model). Top speed has increased from 305 km/h to 310 km/h, which edges that of the world’s reigning fastest production SUV, the Bentley Bentayga Speed.

14-year-old crashes stolen car into a Lamborghini Urus

PERTH, AUSTRALIA - A 14-year-old in Australia has a great deal of explaining to do after crashing a stolen Subaru Forester into a Lamborghini Urus SUV on Tuesday night.

According to the Western Australia Police Force, the trouble started just after 8pm when officers were patrolling the Como district south of Perth for a stolen white Subaru Forester that had reportedly been seen in the area. The vehicle had originally been reported as stolen during a home burglary on October 6.

The officers spotted the vehicle in a driveway and then parked behind it in their marked Toyota Hilux, but the alleged thief was having none of that, and promptly reversed the Subaru at speed, bumping the Hilux in the process, before speeding off.

But it wasn’t long before he met fate in the form of a yellow Lamborghini Urus at an intersection. While no injuries were reported, both vehicles appear to be written off, making it an incredibly expensive accident - considering that a new Lamborghini Urus starts at $390 000 AUD, which is around R3.9m in our money.
