LAN help!

Hi MBB forumites,

I’m looking to set up a LAN to a flat at the other side of the small holding.

It is about 110-130 meters away from the main house.

1. What would be the cheapest option? (Wireless or piping with the network cable)
2. Will there be drawbacks to any of the above mentioned?
3. Do I have any other options?

Wireless.

The distance is outside ethernet cable spec but should still work okish. Drawback to running ethernet cable outside is lightning strikes.

You think the wireless will actually go over the 100m distance?

I don't think he means just setting up a wifi router?

Cabling = cheaper and should still be ok for that distance.
Wifi = you're probably looking at around R2000+ for equipment on both sides.

Yes. Directional antennas would be better.

You can get wireless to go close to 400km if you are really keen...

The OP never mentioned a budget though.

Lightning shouldn't be a problem if the cable and ducting are buried.

True, but it is not a hard limit. If you cannot get full 100 Mbps to work properly, chances are good that 10 Mbps will still work. If you use high quality cable the net crosstalk and losses might be low enough that it will still work fine.

As for wireless, it can work very well, especially with directional antennas. It will be more expensive, though.

Now this is the difference between someone knowing the facts, but not having experience. You can easily go more than 100m, like Tacet mentioned as well. It's just not recommended.

Nothing against you w1z4rd, just saying... ;)

If you can't get error free 100Mb/s bump it down to 10Mb/s, usually more stable at lower speeds.

Think i will start digging that trench for the piping and cable :P

Will try to keep you informed as to whether the distance is an issue.
 
Having personally done this exact same thing, I would say its 120m before you really notice the cable is not performing. So yes, 130m is going to be really pushing your luck! Holding thumbs for you fella :o)

I've gone just over 150m, running perfectly on 10mb.
