Hi BBer's

So I moved to a new house and had my fibre connected (Openserve/Vox) , unfortunately ONT is at 1 end of the house ( k@k location ) and my office is at the other end of the house, so I got some guys (pro cabling co )in to run me 2 cables from the ONT to my office and upstairs.

So my current setup is.

Openserve ONT ---> Vox Supplied Linksys router
Router ----> 10 port Mercusys switch
2 lan cables from switch into office and upstairs.
Now my problem is as follows.

When I plug the office cable directly into my laptop it shows that the lan is connected but no internet, but when I plug the cable into a TP-Link Deco M unit I get wifi internet.
Also if I plug the cable into a switch in my office and then from the switch into my laptop or Deco I get nothing.

Can anyone please give me any ideas on what to check/replace

Regards
Grant

Where is the TP link Deco M unit or is that the mercusys switch?
I would first check what IP address you get when you plug into the switch, directly etc.
check connectivity to your default gateway

This will help you narrow down where the issue is. The switches might be managed and have VLAN config on them that needs adjusting

That doesnt make sense so if I had to guess. You have port isolation on the switch, and the deco is not getting Internet through the Ethernet, but meshing somewhere else. You might need to send pictures :)

How much you pay the guys for the cable run? It costs about R1500 to just get your provider to move the ONT to a better location.

Hi just to clarify.
Cable from Openserve ONT into Vox Linksys router
From the router cable into Mercusys switch
From the switch 2 lan cables ( 1 x upstairs and 1 x into office )
If I plug the lan cable from my office directly into my laptop I get no IP address either from the router or the switch, I've used different cables and plugged it directly into the router and into the laptop also with no IP or internet access.
If I plug the cable into a Deco M4 unit in my office I get a wifi signal which I can connect to

This doesnt make sense.
The WIFI signal you connect to, do you get internet on it?
If you take the cable out the switch and into the linksys router and put the other end into your laptop, does it work?

My guess is still something on the switch though that is isolating the ports or has some configuration on it. Which would be strange for default settings but who knows

Are you sure the laptop LAN adaptor doesn't have a static IP thats different to that of the router?

the Deco is probably on auto IP (laptop side) and links wirelessly with the router, thats why it's working ?

EDIT: can't those 2 new cables go directly into the Vox router ... why the need for a switch at that end?

We need pics of both sides

What happens if you plug a cable directly into the Mercusys switch and then into the laptop?

Also FYI: if you are looking for a switch (if it turns out to be that), I bought couple of these recently
But they are super low power and super solid, can recommend.
