Langa slates Convergence Bill

There is only one issue I have with Langa's presentation to the portfolio committe, as reported in the article, and that is calling for ICASA to be the traffic police on the road to empowerment, IMO that is sufficiently dealt with in existing legislation, as well as the upcoming ICT charter, I don't feel that ICASA should be distracting itself with being the BEE watchdog as well... But that's my personal opinion, and I can live with ICASA touting BEE as long as the Telecoms market is actually liberalised and effective competition is introduced, and the consumer benefits...:)

The rest of Langa's presentation sounds good enough for me to support, I just wish Langa was going to be staying on as an ICASA councillor...

As always, I will probably be swayed by the discussion from fellow forumites :).

i think you are spot-on

unfortunate that he is leaving just as the regulator (ICASA) is going to face the biggest administrative nightmare in transferring licenses and is going to have real balls to implement additional terms and conditions on the licenses of dominant entities

i predict chaos

Insofar as the BEE thing goes ...
- let it bee, let it bee, let it bee, Whisper words of wisdom, let it bee.

If those that know what it all actually means control BEE, then they will have a better understanding of the net affect of a BEE order.
i.e. Let those who know what's going on in the communication industry make BEE decisions affecting the communication industry.

To clarify, my viewpoint is that if ICASA has to fully investigate each and every applicant-entity to determine whether it is 100% BEE or not, then it will take one heck of a long time to get a licence to do anything at all, and another thing - what if ICASA makes a mistake [the reason why it will have to take longer] - they could be sued for detramentally affecting that entity's business... IMO there are bigger things to worry about, like actually liberalising the market and getting competition in place.

Also, ICASA could reserve the right to withdraw a licence if the entity claimed to have been fully BEE compliant, and it later turned out that was not true - there is more than one way of checking under a cat's skin to see if it really is BEE...;)

Hehe, that song came from the bee-tles. (Beatles).
Nice one. :D

To bee, or not to bee, that is the question. (from Hamlet 3/1)

ICASA should and always be neutral.

Langa for new Minister of Communications.
:D

Why the hck not Langa for the new MoC? How do we get hold of him and get him to announce his candidacy for government? He has to be an elected official right? Well, if he ever stood, he would have my vote! :D

Shall we vote...

Yeah, I think I will add my voice to support Langa for the head of the DoC campaign...

Do we really need to ask Thabo's permission? - perhaps we can just vote Mandla Langa in as Minister of Communications...:D

Yeah :D..but then we'll have to create a clone of Thabo Mbeki :D.

The Plan

- Make Thabo have " extra sleep [pills etc] "
- Get the new Thabo to come into his residence so none of his bodyguards get suspicious
- Sign the form :D

Easy hey ;)?

Dear Mr Langa
If you ever decided to run for government (which I sincerely wish you would consider) then I would pray for you to take the reins of our very sad Ministry of Communications and show this country what real progress is all about.
You would have my vote sir, 110%.
I am behind you all the way.
Sincere thanks for your outstanding service to South Africa. ICASA is going to be lost without you.
Kindest regards

Just sent this - may as well let him know how we feel directly. Hahaha

I don't have a problem with that, as long as the Thabo-clone left in the country, doesn't decide to get a Thabo-jet as well...at least one of the Thabos would be in the country...:D

Wowowowowowowowwowowowowwowowowow

jeepers chaps - a personal message from Langa in my inbox....message reads
** High Priority **
Dear Phillipa
Thank you so much for your message of congratulations. It meant so much to me and I hope that the sector will grow in a manner where all the consumers will feel that all their needs are being addressed.
All the best.
Mandla
Is it just me or do you also get the feeling this guy is moving on because he gets as frustrated as we do?

Thats what the one of the articles mentioned yes. Working at ICASA is like trying to play golf with both hands tied behind your back.
