Hey guys, looking to get a new laptop but a bit out of the loop.
Gonna source it from overseas so need to send over the specs I need.

Was wondering if anyone has a reliable laptop gfx comparison site?
And if anyone knows off hand what the desktop equivalent of NVIDIA Geforece GT130M (1gb); Nvidia GeForce GT 120M (1gb); Nvidia Geforce 9300M GS 256MB?

Any brand in particular (toshiba, hp, asus, acer, lenovo etc) I should look out for/avoid??

thx in advance for the advice.

HP/Dell/IBM/Lenovo would be a good buy. Preferably stay away from the rest. These are the best brands.
The GT130/120 is in line with the GTX250/260 for desktops (obviously not as fast). Definitely a must have if you want to play games on your laptop. The 9300GS is about 70% the speed of a desktop 9300. It's okay but a no-no for today's games. Especially with the amount of RAM it has.

My suggestion is go for Asus gaming series.. cheap compared to here and great performance.. my frined got one with a 9700M and it is a monster with games :P

'scuse the ignorance but although the tom's hardware link says it includes the moblie graphics cards it still does not compare 130/120M's

Looking at something like this atm, want to play some games with it (probably replacing my desktop with this) but nothing too intense (addicted to dota :P). So I guess at this point any graphics card would do... was just considering possible future prospects of running starcraft 2 on ultra-low settings.

Going to try get it in Taiwan, something around these specs with perhaps a bit more hdd space. Could probably get it for around R6500 ish. Is there anything from this I should be aware of?

On a side note, if I were to take out my current desktop's 500GB SATA II hdd and buy an ext hdd case with it to run on my laptop, would it be significantly slower (ie. running applications off it etc)?

Thanks guys

Hmm, I just assumed TH would have mobile cards too.... WRT your external drive, try get a notebook with eSATA, that should give you SATA speeds on an external enclosure.

please elaborate :P
i understand one step involves me getting an external enclosure for my current hdd... from then on... vision blurred

eSATA allows you to connect your SATA external disk directly to your computers SATA port. This is quicker than going though the USB port (you could not do this with IDE since it was not hot swappable and had a 40 pin cable).

So you must buy an enclosure with eSATA and a laptop with eSATA. Then simply connect the two with the cable provided, and it functions as a USB drive would. This option requires an external power supply, unlike some external drives that are powered by the USB port.

Ati also make graphics cards. :-) anything from the 3650 upwards should be fine.

shot guys, can anyone point me in the direction of an e-sata enclosure seller in sa
