Hey, I don't know if this is the correct place for the post. I'm in the process of getting insurance on my laptop as I travel a lot and sometimes to small not so safe towns. My question actually is, is it worth getting insurance. Do you struggle when you claim. Do they have issues when you claim. Can you also claim if it's dropped. I'm with Dial-Direct. Any advice will be help full.

Thanks

I've got all my laptops insured. The only problem I have claiming is when it is one of my Macs as there isnt anyone locally who can make an assessment.

Surely you can claim from your car insurance? Phone them and find out how much extra they would charge for your laptop to be included.

They do it with radio's so why not a laptop?

Make sure you read the fine print regarding laptops getting stolen from inside your vehicle, I had one insured with Dial-Direct for R10,000 the paid me R1000 cause it wasn't locked in a boot!

What happens if your laptop gets stolen from anywhere other than your car? Or you drop it?

They specified the same thing with my camera gear. Also it couldnt be left in my boot overnight.

Read read read read the fine print.

They'd rather insure you for dropping your laptop in a bucket of water than for a small repair or any issue not stated in the fine print.

What do you mean by assessment. They told me it's about R100 or so rand to specify it, like my Xperia is separate on my insurance. But I don't want to maybe pay it for 2 years and then have a problem when I claim.

The assessment is for when it is damaged - not so much a problem if it's been stolen :)

Thanks!

I got this from a document on Dial - direct's website:We do not compensate you for: More than R8 500 in total per incident if your insured items are stolen from the locked boot of a vehicle. There will be no cover if we cannot see the damage caused by the break-in.

So if I understand correct even if it is on for R10000 you will never get more than R8500 if it's in the boot, where must you keep it then. One more thing do they give you a cheque or do they give you what they want to.

My take on it would be R8500 max per incident unspecified, but at whatever value is stated for specified items, subject to all that fine print, of course
