Laptop issue, display going blank after few hours.

I've got a Toshiba laptop.

Anyways, I've set Vista to "do nothing" when I close the lid. The screen gets switched off as it should when I close it and then I leave it to do transfers or whatever I'm busy with.

The problem is, after a few hours in this state, when I open the lid again, the display looks light black, I can see the backlight is on, but I don't see Windows or anything?

I've got a screensaver running after 10 minutes with the Vista logo, but I'll disable it tonight and test again. The computer isn't set to hibernate or sleep or anything.

I have to manually press the power button to shutdown the next morning and switch it on again.

Is this an issue with my lappy, or Vista?

Thanks
tera ;)

Edit: I forgot to add, if I set the display to turn off after a few minutes (with the lid open) after a few hours I can't resume it either?

Isnt heat build-up going to be an issue with the lid down and the laptop churning away?

If you close the lid hardware settings will want to initiate power saving regardless of OS settings AFAIK

Could be, I'm not sure, that's why I'm asking, since I really don't know.. :p

That could be true, but this only happens after a couple of hours, not straight away.

Edit: check my edit in the first post.

I've never had issues with my laptop doing that. I often leave the screen closed overnight (I rarely switch off my laptop)

Same here, I leave the screen closed over night (copying or stuff) and the next morning all is fine. Windows XP.

I just use Linux. My power management is set to "switch screen off but do nothing" if I close the lid. I also set hdd power management and the other funny stuff to off.

Is it not maybe a "Turn hard disks off" or "Turn screen off" after a certain duration?

I applied that workaround from the MS site as above, the difference was last night, I played music while I slept, I opened it this morning and it was fine. I'll try it without the music tonight, hopefully it works.

If it doesn't work then you know that you should go to sleep with some music in the background.... :D

Yep :p

Edit: it worked fine even without playing music, seems sorted ;)
