Laptop lacking performance

Well I've taken the thing into Axiz is it? for repairs, lets see what their prognosis is but I appreciate the feedback all the same and I'll keep you all informed.

I must just say while Vista is definitely more taxing on the resources is wasn't the cause of my dissatisfaction. This performance lose is something more sinister than Vista...

I had a sharp decrease in performance on my laptop a little while ago. After much fussing etc etc I found the problem to be the drive for some reason was running in PIO mode (very slow and CPU intensive) instead of DMA.

To check that this is or isn't the case: (xp instructions, might have to adapt a little to vista)
Right click my computer and go to properties OR go to "system" in the control panel
Click "Hardware" tab
Click "Device Manager" button
Expand "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers"
Go to the controller you disk is connected to (most likely the first one) and right click, properties
Click the "primary channel" tab and check what transfer mode the disk is in

Dam it that sounds like very good advise but it's with HP already for repairs. Would have liked to test your theory, sounds like a very simple fix and often it is..

I have a HP laptop pre-installed with Vista. Therefore they have already supplied all the relevant drivers. Yet still it just crashed 5 minutes ago when I used the mouse. There is a reason why some manufacturers are offering users a downgrade option to WinXP from Vista ...

the problem with sharing is ppl who dont know how to change it to EVERYONE

vista has 0 network problems in fact vista's networking is much better than xp

Actually quite a few people have had network issues with vanilla Vista, the updates help considerably. My advice is wait for SP1.

ya no im not saying you are :)

just saying loads of ppl i know complained about the sharing till i told them to right click and select everyone

then it worked :)

with vista u just need to digg and feel your way around

Too true - but the reason for that is that manufacturers cant be bothered to create the necessary drivers or their hardware.

I still haven't got my laptop back from these guys but that's because they waiting for a new cpu, mother board and cpu cooling fan. They apparently suspect 1 of these 3 components to be faulty...???!!!......

they've had it since the 17th, time almost up.... they did explain that if they needed to import parts 7-10 working days..

well got my laptop back yesterday, the 13th November 2007 and the mother board, cpu and heat sink have been replaced, I've reloaded windows media center and she is flying!!! What a pleasure!!!

Yip, my only expense incurred was the petrol getting there...

Can’t say I'm impressed with their service, I mean they had the machine for almost a month!!!! But it's back and it's flying and I'm as happy as a pig in ****e...

In the last 3 months I've had the laptop, my N95 and my ipod in for repairs... and I'm happy to report that other than the delays all components have been repaired satisfactorily and under manufacturer’s warranties...
