My dad bought an acer travelmate 4201wlmi 2 years ago. Couple weeks ago the monitor started really bugging out. Sent in to Acer and they've just sent a quote for R4100 to replaced the LCD. Now, the damn thing only cost like 7k 2 years ago and pcmall seem to have it for R6400.

So I told my dad that its a crazy price and would be far better to just get a new laptop.

On that, any suggestions for an affordable no fuss work laptop? It's only used for things like email and excel. No games etc.

When will new laptops start to be bundled with Win7? Having tried the RC, I think my dad will love it and would like to kill two birds with one stone.

Any ideas what I should do with the old laptop? Everything else seems to be fine. Could I hook up his current HD to the new laptop so I can recover his emails and the like?

Thanks

Excellent advice....Don't buy acer, its cwap.

Why not invest in a netbook, relatively cheap and gets the basics done.

Buy a nice LCD monitor for the laptop. Buy a good make wireless mouse and keyboard

Put laptop underneath table (out of sight) - plug monitor and set up wireless stuff.

Disable suspend/hibernate when the lid is closed

You'll have a desk free of clutter and a quiet, hidden PC. ;)

My Acer's monitor also died. At one stage I could find the inverter - which is what probably burned out - for $29.95 online but now that site does not have them anymore.
Back in Singapore I even visited Sim Lim Square - and those guys fix any type of LCD panel (laptop) and only two guys could sell me an inverter and the one wanted 600 Sing Dollars while the other did not have stock (although he wanted a bit less). You can still use your machine with an external monitor or try to buy an inverter on Ebay or online - it may work and only cost tou $30 + shipping.

Can't go wrong with an IBM/Lenovo

Well, buy the replacement screen and have a go at replacing it yourself. Not really that difficult. And yeah, Acer is

It's not the whole LCD panel, just the inverter. Most of the time, it's the inverter which burns out - the LCD is fine.

Maybe Acer support can be tricked into telling him what's wrong with his laptop and if it's the inverter (most likely) he could buy a new one online and save a good few bucks.

Well then it's definitely a rip-off!!

The Librarian has a good idea there, though.

On the quote it simply said LCD needs to be replaced. And the item they were getting was a 15" LCD panel.

Hp Probooks are nice

HP NX446EA probook 4510S , with built-in 2.0mp webcam , intel Core2-Duo T6570 ( no VT ) , 2.1GHz ( 45nm, 800fsb ; L1 : 2x 64k , L2 : 2mb , EDB , EiST ) , 2Gb/2048mb DDR2-800 , Intel GM45 chipset , Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD ( 384mb UMA ) , 15.6" Lcd ( 1366x768 WXGA ) , Hdmi TV-out , 160gb HDD , super-multi dvd+/-RW DL light-scribe drive , built-in card reader, bluetooth + dual-band WiFi + gigabit lan + 56k modem , express card/34 , integrated numeric keypad - with windows Vista Business 32bit + Office 2007 Ready ( professional with 60 day free trial )

Nothing wrong with acer in my opinion ibm/lenovo over priced rubish, dazzazzed what your location i may be in a possition to help u have a bust travelmate not sure on the model no but its a 420 somthing maybe we can come to an arangement if the screen size matches

There are other places besides Acer you can send the laptop to that are much cheaper.

Know of any in CT?

Not off the top of my head but there is another thread here about a guy in CT that got his entire LCD replaced for cheap. Will have to look for the thread.

I cannot find the thread, maybe start a new thread with the title Laptop LCD Repair in Cape Town.

In the mean time I have found these from the forum:
http://123crt.co.za/
http://www.completeit.co.za/
http://www.scraptronics.co.za/
Also call 021 555 4187 (Apparently Samsung repair agents) and ask if they can assist you and if not if they can recommend a cheap reliable place. Oh, speak to a techie dude (not reception or sale) as they are usually more than willing to help.
