I have a HP8540w with 4gb internal memory (Samsung 4GB PC3-10600 1333Mhz)
Then it has an open slot for another Memory module.

So i bought another Apacer 8GB PC3-10600 1333Mhz
When i put it in the Laptop Detects 12GB of RAM, On windows XP 32bit its obviously not seeing or even touching the 8GB module.

Once i try to start installing any 64bit OS, Ubuntu 64bit, Fedora64bit, Win764bit its supper slow and eventually crashes and resets the laptop.

So i thought the memory that i have bought is faulty, so i took my colleague's Memory which he hasnt had time to install in his laptop also 8GB exactly the same as mine bought the same day.

Tried it in my Laptop and it gave the same results, So i took the memory and installed it in a HP8440p with the same resault.

So i took out the internal memory and put both 8GB in my laptop the one goes underneath the Keyboard and the other one underneath the laptop.

The PC then recognizes 16GB of ram, and then not even XP wont boot.

So its like this memory is not compatible or something with HP laptops, could it be that HP want you to buy memory from them ?

I dont think win XP can handle more that 4gigs

You dont have to think, its a fact :-)

It HAS got to do with the memory, Im saying that if you install the extra ram the Laptop detects it fine.
Windows XP is not touching the 8GB RAM thats why its working, but as soon as you are loading a 64bit OS and it tries to access the extra 8GB everything goes south.

I dont think the extra memory is faulty, whats the chance of both Memory Modules that we have bought is broken. Think maybe i should rather Phone HP.

Hi Poffle.

Thanks that make allot of sense, I have a Core I7 duel core.
Just got off the phone with HP, They dont seem to know what they are talking about cus the guy says i must use 4 , 4GB modules
My Laptop only has 2 slots, I told him its only got 2 then he says then i must use 2 ,4GB modules then avoiding his mistake, Whilst on the phone i read your post, and mentioned it to him, his awnser was, "Exactly" you can use 8GB on a 4 core, (Only cus i told him that) LOL

Sheesh!

But Thanks you have helped allot.

I'd suggest that you run Memtest x86 with the 12GB of RAM installed and see if that works. If that works, then there is some other issue...

Think like most Laptops your laptop has a max memory of 8GB. Remove the 4GB and see if the pc runs properly. My laptop only runs with a max of 6GB.
Anymore and I get the problems you described

Pada if I run the Memtest in the bios it just hangs, im sure it will also hang when i run a Linux Memtest.

Pho3nix, Will try that, think i have actually , not , But i will make sure :-)

It could very well be that the memory density is too high for your laptop and that the RAM is 100%.

I'm convinced there is nothing wrong with it cus, it detects it fine, the bios reports 12GB or 16GB when i have both 8GB's in, problem starts when something accesses the memory, unless HP sort of locks the MB to only make use of samsung or something, i dunno.

But I recall something related to 8GB and 4 GB memory modules and Quadcore CPU's, I think you can only use max 8GB of memory over 2 modules with a dual core, it also seems like there is a HP8440W that has 4 memory slots, which is kind of weird.

I'm giving up on this one, i will rather get the company to get me a DELL and use the extra memory there, ive sort of had it with these HP's i have +- 40HP laptops in our company mostly HP8440p's and HP8540w's the HP8540w which i have also has some major Nvidia Issues, all of the HP8540's we have have similar symptoms.

Either this, or number of addressing lines on the chipset, or how chipset registers are configured (OEM setup).

Reported memory by BIOS doesn't tell much. If memory test doesn't pass, hangs or reboots, then is not going to work.

Is your company going to remove from the service these notebooks? I would be happy with 8 Gigs maximum.
