Laptop randomly shuts down

There's your issue. Clearly it's built for the Arctic where heat isn't an issue.
Got bored and opened up the POS...

It turns out it indeed has a battery! I assumed it doesn't because none of the sites I checked mentions it. Further when I unscrewed the back the battery was unplugged. So charging it now to see if the battery is any good.

That red LED never lit, so I'm sure I wasn't the one who dislodged the battery cable.

Also, about that upgrade of the RAM, it would be nice if I can find a DIMM slot! :D

At least I can add an SSD

I don't think it has any dimm slots so not upgradeable.

Best to throw a lightweight linux distro on there, a web browser will still chow most of the ram though...

Did you buy it new? If so, take it back, don't say a thing about opening it up and ask them WTF is going on with it.

Nope. RAM not upgradeable. It's basically a phone with a keyboard and a bigger screen. Same whitebox s**t as the Mecer, Connex crap. The added storage expansion option is a plus though.

May be battery is completely dead, some laptops won't turn on if a dead battery is plugged in but will if it is unplugged.

Looks like this one has made a trip or two to the repair shop already. All that tape isn't normal. As is the loose battery. I'd check the battery for any physical defects (swollen) before putting back together.

I had one. I tried.
BIOS is locked down and will only allow a windows 10 install.
I gave it away.
Wasn't a bad little unit though (mine had 64gb onboard storage, no HDD.)

This. Bad batteries do havoc to hardware.

My wife got an old laptop from her father. She asked me to "fix" it because the keyboard didn't work. Took out the dead battery and the keyboard works without an issue.

So can you upgrade the 64GB EMMC Storage to Sata SSD ?
Mine you could yes. iLife Zedair with 64 Gb EMMC, and a standard ssd compartment underneath. I could have added any size drive I wanted, but the nature of those little things is really just a bit of email and internet in a cheap lightweight package. It actually managed 720p youtube with it's little celeron without a problem.

Some of these cheap laptops does not have a SATA slot meaning that you are stuck with the 64GB eMMC.

IIRC my wife's Asus netbook has the same CPU. Its not bad for browsing and word processing. Hers came with a HDD, swoped it for SSD and she is very happy with it. Unfortunately the 4GB RAM is not upgrade-able.
