Laptop recommendation

It's very slow, regardless of number of apps open. It just gets more so, the more is going on...

Why are you so intent on arguing about my laptop?
Of course, I do. What you say now in contradiction to your first and second post:
Essentially, I am looking for something that doesn't need to be rocket fuelled or full of bells and whistles, but that can manage lots of Firefox tabs/multiple documents/many emails, etc without gasping for breath.
[...]
I just need something that is not going to choke on 4.5 parallel Word documents.
Besides of clearly focus on performance with multiple documents opened simultaneously, you are not aware (or don't care) about amount of RAM and other system resources available. You don't say whether you run plain preloaded OS with tons of bloatware, or a clean installation. It is why I mentioned clean installation.
You also don't mention about version of Windows you are running. From my experience 3 of 10 of computers running Windows 8.X (another name for Windows 10) suffer performance problems and poor responce figures due to the various device driver problems.

There are many aspects to consider before pointing for a poor CPU. Once you blame CPU on the public forum without giving any evidence, expect adequate response.

I don't really see much utility in arguing about what sort of laptop I need, nor what you presume I know (or not) about computer hardware.

I did not ask for a lecture, I asked for laptop recommendations, this being the sort of forum where people might know of a couple of good deals going (Cerebrus, for example, pointed out a pretty sweet deal).

I guess it being full of know-it-alls, is to be expected as well...

You also got an advice to buy SSD. Without pointing out precisely what you problem is you will get response you deserve.

If you are just looking for a good deal, just ask again, I will not interfere. However you blame Celeron for the sluggisg response, it is why your problems started. :)

And?

Without pointing out precisely what you problem is you will get response you deserve.

My laptop is slow, and I need an upgrade. That's relatively clear, I would think.

What does 'Laptop recommendation thread' bring to mind?

However you blame Celeron for the sluggisg response, it is why your problems started. :)

It's not the CPU in isolation, no ****, but it's extraordinarily slow, and while you seem a tad obsessed for some reason with insisting it will be solved with more RAM and an SSD, in the complete absence of experience with my specific computer, the main issue is the processor - Trying to fix it with faster sub-hardware is not going to be very sensible nor future-proof.

Wrong. In 95% of cases it is corrupted or overloaded Windows, which can be resolved by clean installation. And remember, I didn't recommend SSD, just mentioned it as an example of replies you received.

@OP buy an SSD and try it out, if it doesn't work get a new i3 and use the SSD in that.

I'm all for adding an SSD but there's a point when a laptop stops being worthwhile to upgrade. I've got just such a machine sitting in my cupboard, a Celeron M. Technically nothing wrong with it but it's so painful to use, and so not worth my time to spend money on, that it's completely unused except in emergencies.

Precisely.

Buying a laptop is a big confusing decision, you need to make sure it meets your needs in terms of power and that it suits your style as well. If you’re looking to save money, though, a third-generation Core processor will do the trick. I would recommend anything labelled Intel Core i3 with 4GB or 8GB. The CPU can make a big difference. A more powerful processor not only means your laptop will run faster, it also allows you to run programs that lower spec PCs struggle with. Check https://www.laptopzone.co.za/shop/ they normal have nice great deals that can save you money.

Still Fast Ethernet adapter? I was in opinion that any laptop in this price range should have Gigabit one.

I don't see the problem with the "slow" 100Mb/s Ethernet? Most users will never use it to its full capacity.

It is slower in data transfer than USB 2.0, did you know it? :)
