I need to get a new laptop for general home use.. There is so much out there - I just don't know where to start looking and what to look for?

So I've narrowed it down to Sony and Dell (definitely NO hp - bad experience with these laptops and their SA customer service in the past). Could anyone recommend a good sony or dell for general use? :)

I can't really recommend any Sonys or Dells as I don't have a fair amount of experience with specific laptops.

I can however say that you will benefit hugely from buying a Dell because of their Warranty service (and I also recommend buying an extended warranty, I've always done it with every laptop purchase and it's always helped in the past).
From what I know Sony laptops can give you goo performance if you're getting the right specs. Just the one I have tried (a Vaio) was very underpowered for the specs it had.

Go for a Dell with the 3 year onsite warranty

Sony build quality is right up there but one thing that pisses me of is the amount of bs software that comes on them.

Dell build quality is much the same as HP but their warranty is awesome.

Definitely don't like HP!! Set up a Dell for a friend also - solid piece of equipment :)

Dell.

Dell for the build quality and awesome warranty and support. Sony parts and service are worth steering clear of.

My gf got me a Dell Studio 1558 as a gift late last year. She paid around R10k for it. Specs are:
Core i5 520M
15.6" 720p WLED screen
4GB 1333 MHz DDR3 RAM
500GB HD (7200 RPM)
1GB ATI Radeon 5470
Embedded 3G
802.11n
Win 7 Pro 64-bit
HDMI and all the usual standard laptop ports
3 year warranty

The equivalently spec'ed Sony would set you back about 2-3k more, for something with the same build quality, lesser warranty, worse service and possibly all sorts of spyware (knowing Sony).

Sony build quality is right up there but one thing that pisses me of is the amount of bs software that comes on them.

Create Win7 restoration DVD from HDD partition. Use vLite to strip all the kuk out of the Sony provided Win7 and write to DVD. Install on laptop and save dvd in drawer.

Not ideal but it's a solution.

Dell - the support is fantastic (get the 3 year NBD on site warranty.) Sony notebooks were overpriced last time I looked at them.

Thanks for the feedback.. It seems Dell is the clear winner in this thread. Is there a major difference between i3 and i5? I need a laptop for general home use..

Hi guys - where is the best place to buy a Vaio (price wise)?
