Laptop - Student

Dell.

I bought about 6 x Dell's right here on Carb from reputable sellers for myself, family , friends and co-workers.

In my opinion the best deals are right here.

Generally for R8000 - R10 000 you get a 1/2 year old laptop that is normally R20 000 +

I am so curious as to why OP would give an Air a skip. It’s made for this exact purpose and target market.
Price, probably the first reason.. learning curve, probably second.. excel 3rd...

Just guessing..

Then what would explain a super slow laptop like this? It takes so long to start up and load applications.

I have the Inspiron 15 3000 with Intel Core i3 7th Gen. Surely it shouldn’t be this slow?
First reason is a 5400rpm mechanical hard drive.. installed in pretty much all laptop brands in the 4000 - 6000 maybe even 7000rand range, not just Dell..

Secondly is insufficient RAM coupled with preloaded software that takes ages to startup on boot..

A reputable PC shop will be able to set you out if you buy additional RAM and an SSD and you are likely to see a drastic improvement in performance..

That's why there are zillions of PC shops around that'll do it.

Thank you Both. Was ready to chuck this thing as my old Samsung from 2013 is faster than it.

How much would I be looking at price wise? I obviously don’t want anything hectic, just so that it’s faster.

Up to R15 000
Consider the Acer Aspire 5 range. Bought the i7 based one during Black Friday for R14k but now listed for R 16999 @ Everyshop and out of stock. Son is very happy.

They have an i3 one listed @ R 9999 or and i5 one @ R 12999. Product aimed at students and both these also have SSD's.

Which model do you have exactly and year..?

Rough guestimate for RAM and SSD plus costs for PC shop might 2.5k though likely to be less than that..

Got my kid a Dell Inspiron for high school last year - one year warranty, mediocre build quality, piece of crap.

We're selling it to put the money towards a macbook air.

If I was a student with an high budget, I would get this:

Yes, it's out of stock, but it's small, lightweight and very versatile being a 2 in 1.
I would consider a 2 in 1 Inspiron as well.

I had a look in the HP store, and they also had some pretty good looking small laptops.

The same rules apply. AT LEAST full HD / 1080p
Definitely an SSD. You can get by with a 256GB, but you really want 512GB. My wife has a 256GB SSD, and I think she still has more than 100GB free after almost 2 years of usage.
Also i3 and up. No celerons.
8GB RAM minimum, but I like 16GB.

You didn't see the warranty when you bought it? You can get a dell with 3 year warranty and decent build quality. Every brand has their crap, including Apple.
Could have had a three year warranty and it would still be a piece of crap. The keyboard and trackpad are both sub-par.

But thanks for the heads up though - let me know which of the Apple laptops that came out this year are crap so I can steer clear of them.

Doubt you'll find many since we're only in the first month but the whole Apple butterfly keyboard saga from 2015-2019 comes to mind.

First month? Apple released the first M1 models in November 2020 and they've been pretty much universally lauded.
