Ok I cleaned the one laptop at home over the weekend took out fans and keyboard and properly cleaned them all working correctly except for the strange time problem I have.

I noticed on Sunday that it keeps loosing the time. I will run for a while and just randomly jump back to a certain time. I have swithed the windows time sync feature on or off does not make a difference. Time zone is correct.

First few day kept on changing time when seeing it is incorrect. Last time I manually set the time was
Tuesday morning (20 August 2011 10:34 am). So what happens now is while the pc is running the time keeps resetting back to the last time I manually set it at random.

Any ideas what could be causing this behaviour? I am gonna a new cmos battery during the weekend. Just the first time seeing something like this happening very wierd. The laptop is fairly new, maybe 1 year and 4 months.

If the time is loose use prestik.

If its losing time, then check that it is not set to synchronize with an internet time server.

could be the battery.

also check the AV (or if there's none). there's a really old virus that would reset the time back to a specific time. (discovered this about 8 months ago)

can't think of any other possibilities right now.

The time is not supposed to change while the PC is on, even if the CMOS battery is flat.

I would suggest that you setup your laptop to automatically update its time from like ntp.is.co.za if your ISP is Internet Solutions.

bekdik, what I meant was:
if your CMOS battery is flat, and your laptop/PC is also switched off, its time might reset.
Where as if you leave the laptop/PC switched on, the time should continue as usual, even if the CMOS battery is flat.

Don't worry found the problem. I opened it again, the plastic housing for the cmos battery is very badly designed and it had a piece of tape holding it in place. The tape came loose and battery was not making full contact. I modified a small plastic cap to keep it in place has now been running for allmost a day and seems to be fine I even swithed of a few times and pulled to main battery out. It's still ok so far...

oh ok good found the cause :D. I thought it had to do with the CMOS battery.

Buy a new battery, they cheap.
Just take the old one to a hardware place and buy a new one - I know Esquire sell the lithium batteries.
