After I have loaded registry mechanic and spyware doctor my laptop has become very slow. How do I find out if there are applications running in the background. Maybe this could be the problem.

Anyone out there with help in this regard?

My laptop also keeps on switching off for no apparent reason. After this happens my keyboard and mouse becomes unresponsive. I then have to use my cordless mouse and keyboard.

Go to the task manager and see what application uses the most cpu/ram.

Best advice if you can Backup and reload, if thats not an option ran antivirus and spyware progs, still not happy, take it to your nearest techie and have him disable unneccesary startup items.

take it to a techie the worst thing you can do by stopping processes is possibly jam your machine (stopping explorer.exe) run msconfig from the run menu then you can stop processes from starting up permanently, but if you stop the wrong thing certain apps may not work correctly, a techie will be your best bet and should only cost you 1 -2 hours labour at most.

ok. thanx. will have to wait till 2morrow. ;)

gee, thanx ;)

This won't stop the processes the next time you restart. That's true. However, it offers more info than the standard Win Task Manager.

As someone said, Start -> Run -> MSCONFIG (enter) -> Startup and you can see what's starting up at each start. You can also google the name of each process as well. There you can disable items but one should know what's one doing to avoid disabling something important like an antivirus or bootmanager which may prevent a proper system start the next time.

cant find run on my start menu. running windows xp professional service pack 2.

you guys have to be very very patient with me. Im just a lowly teacher, and you know what they say: those who can't, teach :(

Why dont u just uninstal those two program if its what made ur laptop slow?

Anyways I think u can get "RUN" by pressing "Window button" + R

If the program makes ur lappie slow, take it out.

Make sure u have more than 2 gigs of ram and 2 gigs of HDD space

If u dont want to play with startup things, just close program once ur laptop starts up, close everything u wont be using and leave the ones u are gonna use right about now

i think the best thing to do is to rather take it to a techie :(

Don't do that. I can assure you that the combined knowledge on this forum is better, not to mention cheaper, than any techie :)

Lets start at the very beginning, we need some info, you can post screenshots it may be easier:

PC specs - Right click My Computer, Properties. Under computer it will show your processor and ram.
Task manager - Hold Ctrl + Shift press Esc. Print screen of the processes tab, and the performance tab. Or just list the total/available RAM, and everything under commit charge.
List of installed apps, Control Panel, Add remove programs.
