So new Laptops don't come with Windows 8 stickers or labels at the bottom of the device any longer.

We had to reload a system at work recently and couldn't make use of the recovery partition, since it was corrupt and the manufacturer sent us a disc.

So my question is. The manufacturer said the license is on the "motherboard", which I find hard to believe.
I also find it hard to believe that it's on the disc, since it looks like a standard recovery media disc.

So where is the product key located?

I'm baffled?

We'll do the reload next week to see if it works, but any explanation would be welcome.

Did the install ask the licence input?

Like this, BIOS-embedded Windows 8 product keys, note that in many cases depending on the embedment that only the OEM provided disc will be able to re-install Windows. This means that retail copies won’t install, nana.

There is also a workaround, Google PID.txt, this will overwrite the command and ignore the embedded key.

A bit more info would have helped :)
Have you looked under the battery?
Yes, nothing there.

Yep, we reinstalled it first and attempted to activate with the product key we retrieved prior to format, didn't work. Now we will have to reformat with recovery media. It's not an issue. At least I know now how it works. It's not embedded on the "motherboard", but rather in the UEFI BIOS which makes sense. Thanks.

My earlier versions of Windows worked the same on laptops, no need to enter a key using the OEM disc.

If you want to get really technical....the BIOS is part of the motherboard, so it's embedded on the motherboard. ;)

Ok. I'll ask your mechanic to explain that your car is broken next time you take it in for repair. Should cover all bases for you.
