And games of course.

The box is R4999 at Hi-Fi Corp.
If it's inclining to the rip-off side, please suggest a physical place where I can purchase a laptop for under R5k.

EDIT: I'm based in E.L

Very good price dude but 5k and gaming do not really work together if you are buying a laptop.

I am not sure if you need the portability of a laptop but it seems you may want a desktop if that is not the case.

I wouldn't buy a laptop from HI-Fi Corp, but maybe that's just me.

Hi

No mention of Graphics system. Probably integrated Intel and using RAM. This laptop would be for the office type stuff and very light graphics. CAD and gaming forget it.

If that's what you want it to run i'd suggest don't get a laptop with graphics lower than a ATI 4650 1GB Dedicated - even the ATI 4530 512MB dedicated which is in some of the HP's won't be a wise idea

I agree you wont want to go lower than that but that will cost you another 5k $$$

Thanks. Well I'm not a gamer, but I'd need your odd Sims, PES, Fifa 10, etc. And I'm after mobility, don't want to get stuck with the PC at one spot.

Thing is, I don't know the model number, the laptop is in the latest Hi-Fi corp. .pdf advertisment. I think I saw (not on PC currently) another laptop (HP) with a dedicated 512MB RAM for graphics, at R5499 or somewhere there, is that OK at least for gaming (not hardcore)? When do I start using CAD on a laptop (specifications)?

Hi Khanya

CAD is graphics demanding... I would decide on CAD application 1st and then see what hardware is needed. Some CAD applications require rather specific graphics specs and laptops meeting these start at around R15000.

A laptop purchase should be determined by what you are planning to use it for... decide what its primary function will be.

I would consider the following the MINIMUM budget spec for any Photoshop / light gaming...

http://www.zapsonline.com/gigabyte-...154-widescreen-notebook-re9w1580p-733dza.html

Intel® PM45 express chipset
* Genuine Microsoft® Windows® 7 compliance
* Support Intel®Centrino® 2 Processor Technology
* 15.4'' TFT-LCD WXGA, 1280x800, Glare type
* DDRII 667/800MHz, SO-DIMM*2 (Max 4GB*2)
* NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 130M 512MB

R5,539 tax incl.

Remember... decide 1st just what you will use the laptop for mostly... and work from there.

Why? And where would you buy it?

It's just that their after sales service and support is not rated the best by all accounts. I would pay a little more from dealers who have a creditable record in this department. Of course you may never need to test it, which is what you can hope for no matter where you buy it.

It's almost time for Christmas so rather hold out for specials on a Dell Studio laptops. They range from R8000 upwards but they are built to handle demanding applications like CAD and Photoshop. Also Dell's after service is excellent. You may even get a 17" at R8000. I know Game, Dion Wired and Incredible stock these.

Thanks. Scrape CAD then. At least fluent Photoshop, InDesign and video editing programs.

Basic Photoshop and InDesign maybe (not fluently, as you put it) - but video editing software, highly unlikely.

Oh gosh, are you serious? 3GB RAM and no video editing? What's specifically needed for normal video editing? 8GB RAM? 4GB RAM and 512 dedicated? Or?

LOL... video editing like CAD requires RAM, yes, it also requires fast hard drives and dedicated graphics cards... if not, you will spend more time fighting with the thing than actually editing!

You will be able to do BASIC video editing stuff... but be prepared to wait while it has to process all the video stuff with your CPU. Stuff like effects, transitions etc. will all need to be re-encoded by the CPU... you will end up doing a lot of waiting instead of editing!

RAM is always important. BUT for video and CAD stuff, you need dedicated graphics cards... and these start costing a lot when crammed into laptops.

Budget on around R12K - R15K for a laptop that can begin to do this. These laptops are usually called "mobile workstations" and are expensive.
