I've just been forcedto download the Nokia software updater. Again. Everytime I run it, there is a new version and it makes you download it. Unfortunately, the latest version doesn't recognise my phone, so it won't even attempt to find a firmware update....

Just successfully updated on a spoofed EU prod code. Any idea where on the PC the Nokia software would have placed the downloaded firmware? A file search based on dates and minimum file size didn't turn anything up. (I searched while the update was being done, so NSU would not (yet) have deletedthe downloaded file).

Sometimes it takes a while before updates are available in all regions. If an update isn't available for one's region, it's best to wait until it is available.

I've just completed upgrading my phone via Nokia PC suite updater. Apart from leaving its mark on my cap, it just worked!

Note - make a backup of the phone before upgrading as it overwrites the phone software.

What is the version number of the firmware after the upgrade? Mine is on 100.07.76, and it won't pdate because it says that's the latest version...

Alternatively how do you spoof an EU product code?

Check the link in the original post - its all there....

Next question - was the upgrade worth the schlep of doing all that or should I just wait till it's released for the existing product code?

No schlep at all (for me anyway) - changing the prod number takes around 30 seconds. With us not even having access to the previous 1.10 firmware yet, who knows how long the wait is going to be.

Must you change the product code back after the update?

Upgrading E71 firmware

Thought I'll just share the steps I followed to upgrade my phone (for those that are unsure ;))...

First read this before updating your phone (to backup and restore your phone data)
http://nokiae71.wordpress.com/2008/11/19/before-your-update-yours-e71-or-other-s60-phones/

Then read this for a (little) more info regarding your phone's product code.
http://blinkthinks.wordpress.com/2008/07/23/nokia-e71-asian-product-codes/

After you've done your backup, remove the Memory Card from your phone.
Connect your phone to the PC via the USB cable (selecting PC Suite from the options).

Download Nemesis Service Suite Beta 1.0.38.14 from http://www.b-phreaks.co.uk/index.php?main_page=page_2
Extract and run the NSS installation package.
Select the Virtual USB Device option when asked.

Launch NSS (Nemesis Service Suite)
Click on Scan for new device (the magnifying glass).
Select Phone Info from the toolbar.
In the Action panel, click Scan.
Your phone's IMEI number should come up on the left (with some other info)
Click Read in the Product Data Edit panel.
Change the Product Code to your desired product code (see note below).
Check the Enabled checkbox next to it.
Click on Write.
Exit the program.

Code:
I used the following product code for my phone...
CODE: [b]0567045[/b]: RM-346 EURO A UK/IRELAND GREY STEEL

You're phone should now be ready for the firmware update.

Launch NSU (Nokia Software Updater)
Start the update process (NSU should report an update available - 200.21.118)
While it's downloading (107Mb), go watch <enter favorite series name here> :).
After the software update, disconnect your phone from the USB cable.
Put your Memory Card back.
Enter your pin.
Enter the country, time, etc (same as when you first switched on your phone)
Restore your phone data (from Memory Card or PC depending on how you did the backup)

Not sure whether you must change the product code back or not, but my phone is working fine with the new one (I might eventually change mine back) :D
If you want to (or need to) change your product code back, do so with NSS again.

Disclaimer: Updating your phone's firmware is done so at your own risk and can destroy your phone if something goes wrong. I cannot be held responsible if anything happens. All this information was gathered from various sources on the internet and applied exactly as stated above on my phone.

Because the nokia updater won't update your phone unless your product code is one of the ones for which the firmware update is intended, and ours aren't...

upgraded mine. Wow - what a mission. Even with a backup you have to install most of the apps again. Redoing the settings of some of the voip and mail for exchange stuff took a while. I must still see if Nokia maps and Garmin are still happy (on the card). The new themes look good. It was possible to install most of the new stuff (like mynokia and internet radio) individually (without upgrading). I haven't noticed any other major differences except for going into one of the settingsmenus used to be slow. Now it is fast like it should be.

Who supplied you phone?

It doesn't matter. It is a per region code. So we should have African Phones. It is important to remember which region you have changed it to because some apps (like mail for exchange) depend on the product code. Be sure to choose the 'right' (your current setting of) region when downloading these apps.
