*Large* E71 Firmware Update

I also see that they have not corrected the problem (?) where the text message's sender is shown as 'Surname Name' regardless of how the phone book is set up. Odd.

It doesn't matter. It is a per region code. So we should have African Phones. It is important to remember which region you have changed it to because some apps (like mail for exchange) depend on the product code. Be sure to choose the 'right' (your current setting of) region when downloading these apps.

So then I wonder why the E71 supplied to me by MTN worked from the Nokia site? Yes I did choose the Africa/South Africa location.

But which version of the software did it update to? the 200.xx.xx or the previous 101.xx.xx?

Just wondering why you guys need to change your product codes, whereas I didn't?
FYI : My E71 was supplied by MTN.

Maybe MTN is the "golden ticket" here ;)
I pre-checked my prod code (0569116 obtained through Vodacom), and it still showed the 1.00..... as the most current firmware version. Using prod code 0567045 (EU1) made v2 availabel for me.

I would have thought that all RSA resellers/sub-distributors would have sourced the same model from Nokia South Africa. Something is weird here. Be nice if an MTN and a Voda insider could offer insight.

I haven't really noticed any improvements on my phone since updating, but then again, I've only had my phone for 3 weeks :D

Question, are any of our local radio station (94.7, 5FM) compatible with the Internet Radio option on the phone? If so what url must I use?

That is odd/lucky. Maybe the upgrade is released to everyone now. What is your product code? You should be able to see the original one on the sticker on the board under the battery. It is the number after "CODE:". Mine is also a vodacom sourced one and had code 059116.

For code 059116, Nokia site (http://mea.nokia.com/appmanager/Uni...rsion/getVersion&wsrp-mode=&wsrp-windowState=)

shows:

That is not a valid product code. Please check your product code and type it again.

Yesterday I spent the better part of an hour and a half on the phone trying to find out why Vodacom E71's (Product Code 0569116) have been excluded from the last two software upgrades.

For some reason, everytime I call 111, I get shunted through to the pre-paid section, which is a bad start (especially when they hang up and you have to start again).

111 are convinced that it is not Vodacom's problem, and that Nokia release software, not them. Nokia assert that they offer the release to Vodacom, and only if Vodacom OK it, will it be available for Vodacom phones. When I called 111 again, they then tried to tell me that Vodacare are responsible for upgrading firmware, and my explaining that the purpose of the call is not just to upgrade my own firmware (which I doubt Vodacare will be able to do anyway) but to ensure that the firmware is released for Vodacom phones so that I can upgrade myself, I eventually tried speaking to Vodacare. They tried to transfer me to upgrade my handset for a new one, and the second time put me through to the data call centre.

Eventually I tried 111 again (and after passing the time of day with the pre-paid department once more) got through to someone who was prepared to actually log a call, and "some-one in the back office" will call me back within 24 hours.

I'm not all that optimistic, but I'm not going drop my phone off for a week so that Vodacare can reflash it to 100.07.76 (or older), and I'm not prepared to give up my warranty by changing the product code either, so I'll be on their case for a bit.

Sometimes it can pay to be a "stoopid customer"...

Change prod code, flash, change back. If you need warranty service, heck, you don't even know what firmware is... ;)

Nah, stuff that, I'm on a crusade - I'm doing it for all of you poor vodacom customers out there...

I'm actually making progress though - I'm now talking to people who actaully understand that Vodacom has a department who test handsets and sotfware, and even know what floor they're on. Soon now someone senior is going to phone me and tell me that it was an oversight and the culprit has been fired, and that all future firmware updates will be sent directly to me first. Or something like that.

I salute your perseverence, do let us know *if* anything comes off it.

Just had feedback from Vodacom, and according to Nokia, the software is only for Europe.

They put me through to someone from Nokia (by the delays and poor quality on the line, he was either on another continent or a Cell C subscriber). When I explained to him that MTN phones had the update, he got stuck in a loop saying how I have the best software for my phone, and making dire warnings not to change my product code because my internet banking app (and maybe my mapping software) will fall over if I do. These Scandinavian's live on a different planet, I tell you.

When I told him that my phone hangs (as do E71's all over the world) he started wittering away about the menu button to see what tasks are running. What part of "hung" he didn't understand I'm not sure, but when an E71 hangs, you pull the battery out to restart it, and that is the only way it'll get going again. He also assured me that if I take it in to Nokia, they'll be able to sort it out. As I said, he lives on another planet.

The long and the short of it is that to get the upgrade, Vodacom have phones will have to have their product code hacked. But he did mention that, perhaps an upgrade will be available in 3 months time.
