"Newsgroups

XSInet users has access to the Internet Solutions news server (news.is.co.za). There are however many other news services available on the Internet - some are free while others are available at a low monthly cost."

So what settles that then... *wipes sweat from brow*

Thanks folks for the info and help... appreciate it

Don't forget tho, on those accounts if you go over 2/3GB your international is cut off even if that first 2/3GB was local

I tried newsbin, but the darn thing could not re-asemble the stuff i downloaded. Switched to Grabit and all my downloads can be extracted.:D

BTW, If anyone is curious, I don't need international access because I can VPN into work and use the bandwidth from there.

Go to www.newzleech.com, http://yabse.com/index.php?p=www, www.binaries.nl, or any other NZB search engine and search. Tick the box on the file that you want (be sure to tick all the relevant boxes because some files are split up and posted in multiple posts so make sure that you get all the parts - it will be numbered for eg. [00/20], [01/20] etc.). Then click on "get NZB" and save it somewhere.

In grabit, go to the batch tab, then article import, select NZB as the type and click add, then select the NZB file that you saved.

ok, that kind of makes sense... so you cant essentially browse news.is.co.za... but when you search on newzleech I dont get how the whole local Cap comes into this whole thing...

I thought the whole point was that you could download using only your local cap through this IS ners server.. man i am confused now!!!

Please be patient! :-)

The NZB file is like a few KB only, think of it as sort of a map which tells the news server where to look for the actual download. Once you import the NZB file into your news reader's batch, that's when the actual downloading of your files begin from the local news server. Best thing to do is play around with it a bit.

Be sure to have WinRAR (or similar) to extract your files once the download has finished. Might also help to have a separate prepaid Webafrica account so that you can access the international nzb search engines once you reached your international cap on the IS account

Since we are on the subject of 'large local only' accounts and newsgroups, let me say that I can consume whatever my line permits me ie, potentially 90-140gb/month.(384 or 512kbs) This is off the newsgroups.

From what I gather, IS is reluctant to offer larger cheaper local accounts as there is a commercial demand for VPN use which they want to exploit.

So, why can't we have a large AFFORDABLE news server only account?

This way the newsgroupies are happy and IS gets to maintain the commercial viabilty of their local only accounts.

Thanks, that helps. Right now im just playing around coz I still have my Xsinet account which I cant really do much downloading on. Just explain one thing to me please, and then Ill leave you alone... :) How does the whole local/int cap thing work? I mean, you doing a search internationally, then importing the NZB file which tells it what to go and download. It would go and look on the server, the one I am on is NEWS.IS.CO.ZA, and then it starts downloading... at a whopping 8k/sec  Surely the news server can have all that stuff on it coz when you search for the item there is no specific server you are searching on... if you know what I mean?

Thanks man

If it's not on the server, it gets downloaded internationally to the local server, from which you download it. This all happens in real-time so you won't notice it.

news.is.co.za is only one server
the other is nntp.is.co.za
and the beta is news.isdsl.net

So if one is going slow, try one of the others.

news.is.co.za [168.209.98.66]
&
C:\>tracert nntp.is.co.za
Tracing route to news.is.co.za [168.209.98.66]

Therefore: news.is.co.za = nntp.is.co.za

news.isdsl.net is the 2nd news server...
