Largest websites in SA

MSN must be there only because people don't know how or don't care to change the default site in Internet Explorer.

Wow, same glaring omissions there. There is one missing that would make the top 4.
Headline should read, "Largest websites in SA that use EE"

EE - Effective Measures.

What we really need in SA is an independent, free of charge traffic stats provider to get a more accurate picture of the online landscape here.

Are you proposing that Effective Measures are not effective at all? :p

Ah thanks, what are the alternatives? Would be cool if each ISP posted a Top 10 what sites were visited the most.

I wish I knew of an alternative. You can look at Alexa.com but I don't think it is really accurate enough.

EE is quite pricey to use.

Still question how News24 gets so much traffic. It isn't like their journalism is even remotely good.

Still in the Top 10. Well done MyBB and MyBB'ers! :D

...and lurkers too ;)

But yeah, well done MyBroadband! :)

I know there was a study to establish whether Google Analytics can be used as an affordable alternative, but there are challenges. Things like market size, shared audiences, category audiences etc are not provided by GA. The other option is to look at panel data (like Alexa), but the accuracy of those stats can be challenged.

Wouldn't anything that uses site based scripts etc be blockable via AdBlock? How do the Google Analytic results differ from these results?

I can see from a SA point of view why the bigger sites use EE as it helps to your sites credentials with regards to selling advertising.

Of course MSN, Facebook,Google, Yahoo don't have the same problem selling advertising as they are global players.

I doubt any website owner would share Google Analytics statistics with anyone. Alexa does not provide the necessary accuracy and can be manipulated. Effective Measure is a "closed" (read: you pay to be on their list) system but then also is used to drop 3rd party cookies in order to present you with advertising. In my mind, EM was never a trusted source for web analytics as it's core business is advertising and harvesting browsing behaviour (no different than Google).

Yeah, this is BS if you have to pay to include their JS tag. The company I work for has two sites, EverythingMaths.co.za and EverythingScience.co.za, which should be in the top 30.
