I have a Samsung ML-1640, which has been great thus far. The toner has lasted a whole year of fairly solid use but now needs to be replaced.

I see IC have the printer itself for R799 and Game for R749. I cannot find the toner only anywhere on the net for less than this...Can it really be the case that it is cheaper to buy a whole new printer than simply replace the toner? :(

It's a correct assumption. Printers are often loss leaders or maybe not generating losses but the margins are very tiny on commodity printers - the real gravy is in the toner printer manufacturers sell. HP, Lexmark, Epson, Canon, Samsung etc....

Rough times.

I remember the same problem with my previous Brother laser printer. The toner was more than the printer so I ended up just getting another one - I thought it was just an anomaly with that particular one...

very possible

Costs us 2.5g to replace our cartidges of a HP...

"apparently" the cartridges are only half full when you buy the printer... Although i found the extra cartridges we bought went faster than the originals...

Oddly, I found that the cartridges of the various inkjet printers I had prior to switching to laser, were always half-full when buying the printer...

I noticed the same thing with my HP 1018. The toner was around R799 and now it goes for R1099. Guess there must be some reason for a huge jump in toner prices.

i am actually dissapointed in HP...

This specific printer has a problem... somehow the toner gets into the imaging head and then it doesn't print red properly its quite frustrating to say the least... considering buying a new printer... just wonder how i'm gonna get rid of the current one...

Yes there is. The suppliers are being greedy. In the rest of the world prices are actually dropping, in SA they're going up.

Yes, I know the Rand is volatile but in November it was 12.50 to a Dollar, now it's 10.18.

You could take it into Incredible Corruption and trade it in...

hj2k_x, R620 for a new toner? PM me.

The toner that comes with the printer does 750 or so pages. A new "full" toner (as above) does 1500.

Well if that is the case, then it certainly does make sense to buy new toner instead of a whole new , half full, printer.

I shall keep that in mind. Need to look at the finances...February is proving to be as long a month as January :o

Too true. I need to replace my toner soon, so hopefully by then the prices will have dropped or I will be able to find a cheaper supplier.

Let me know any time.

If you hold down the red triangle/only button, it will print out a detailed report (provided you have some toner :D). You'll see that the bundled toner only does 750 pages or so.

It reckons 717 pages printed with 10% toner remaining and cartridge capacity 0.7k which backs up what you are saying :)

Yea people think that toner's cost the same as printers but the printer companies are just trying to sell the printer, i don't think hp and all the other printer companies actually make a great of profit on printer sales, they may even make a loss on printer sales.

Drill hole in toner cartridge. Refill with toner. Plug hole with silicone. My HP 1010's original cartridge is now 4 years old and on it's third refill. 500ml bottle of toner - R100.
