LATENCY!!!

Just got ADSL last week and had good latency results, with a ping of 58ms and 1ms jitter. Now my latency is about 120ms and my jitter is up to 114ms. While browsing is still normal, gaming is impossible.

Tested with Openweb and Afrihost.

where do you stay?
Newlands still fine, 15ms

I'm near Bloemfontein. It's probably irrelevant to the problems in Cape Town, but there is still something wrong. My SNR and noise margins are still the same and I tested it on different networks...

It seems like *something* was fixed at Clareinch, possibly a Metro Ethernet related issue which had a wider reaching impact, but my official sources have not been forthcoming with a proper resolution. Any luck from your side Jeff?
Would appreciate it if you could pass on any feedback you get from Telkom.I have spoken to the Telkom call centre and Rondebosch exchange has been downgraded to 6MB to deal with the congestion/latency issues.

I am not sure if they did that - I am on Rondebosch exchange, I sync at 10Mbps and I get quite good download scores: . Maybe they downgraded a portion of their users only?

elL0L can you find any other ADSL users in your area that have the same experience? It might just be localized to your DSLAM. Ask Telkom if your DSLAM is overutilized and ask them to move you to another one if possible and if not pressure them to upgrade the DSLAM backhaul.

Maybe they're just saying stuff to make you go away? :D I know I shouldn't say that, but honestly I would be very surprised if at this point the call centre had the slightest idea of what was being done at the exchanges, considering the people who can't/won't give me answers...

So far its been great . All my clients have also stopped having problems. Still some slight jitter here and there but nothing bad.

Not sure I can really blame them. Call center employees of our big telecommunications companies probably have some of the worst jobs in the world. They are not empowered to give proper service, there is no escalation procedures, they lack proper training etc. They really just the wall between irate customers and managers who wants to smile, not hear about the problems and hit their next artificial quarterly targets to cash in their bonuses.

you lucky bugger... i was on 10meg originally just before the lag started. since i complained to telkom they have downgraded me to 6meg, then to 4meg, then back to 6meg by request, but they tell me they dont support 10meg on my exchange (rondebosch), even though ive had it before. sigh

anyway, the bad lag is gone however im not 100% sure its still as good as it was directly after the "fix". ill have to do some proper tests soon. ping plotter is an awesome tool for comparing ISPs and adsl lines.

thanks again to everyone who poked telkom. i cant believe they are just going to act like nothing happened now and get away with it. 2 months of telkom bills wasted on that crap and theres no way ill get taht back. **** telkom se ****!

mmm.....It seems then that only those that have logged faults get downgraded. If you request to be upgraded back to 8 or 10 mb the Telkom operators can only push you up to 6MB.

thats a bit ****ing unfair that they downgrade all the people who logged faults. just makes me more angry. :(

i am also having lag tonight across all 3 of my ISPs (mweb is worst). rondebosch 021-685
and my friend in observatory is having the same lag.

i hope for ****sake this is going to be fixed again soon.

Morning guys,

Please see update for Web Africa customers below:

With regards to the increased latency and Packet Loss experienced by our ADSL customers, please see our updated response below:

1. The packet Loss and congestion on the Telkom ADSL Exchanges, specifically in the Southern Suburbs and Cape Town Areas seem to have been resolved by Telkom: If you feel that this is not the case please let us know - so that we can follow up and get the issue resolved.

2. The increased levels of traffic traversing our network, have been addressed with the planned upgrades being brought forward, and finally implemented. We will be monitoring these capacities over the next few weeks, and adding additional capacity if required.

3. The Latency specifically being experienced by our gaming customers will be receiving our utmost attention over the next few days, we are working closely with Vendors to get our traffic management system to correctly match the new gaming protocols, therefore allowing them to be correctly prioritised, improving the traffic flows and therefore your gaming experience.

If anyone is still experiencing issues please contact support, forwarding any supporting documentation as this will help our support staff during the investigation and resolution process.
This should include:

* Telephone number

* DSL Username

* Either an in-game or cmd traceroute to a slow website

Thank you to everyone who has given their feedback, as always, it is extremely
useful.

We will continue to provide information as we progress.

@peter please can you give us details of the problem you're still having - it might be a more isolated issue.

The SAIX transits have now been cut (afternoon of Tues 2nd). Latency to local sites is double what it was yesterday (400ms vs 250ms). Traffic was previously only going to London for the first half of the route, now it goes to London in both directions. Not good...

ya, my ping is totally ****ed. i was gonna do some tests today but its all gone to **** now so theres no point even.

still getting 14-19 ms but my line feels a bit more laggy than yesterday

on rondebosch too, but only get 3.2ish, used to get 4 before the "upgrade" but not complaining, i'm only worried about my ping, dont really need the extra speed.
