I agree. The reason the latest iOS is on more than 80% of iPhones already is precisely because they don't follow the same strategy as Android.

Some portion of the iPhone's flat uptake over the last 2 months could be attributable to timing.

I've been in my upgrade window since June, however it would be silly to get a 4S now when the New/5 is around the corner.

Apple's strategy of controlling the version of iOS that runs on their phones is far better than Android's, and is the precise reason I chose an iPhone over Android - I don't want the manufacturer to decide whether I deserve to get the latest version of the OS. Most of us have to keep our phones for 2 years, and that's an eternity in the current OS software enviroment. I don't want a phone that's out of date after 6 months!

Ah so this is what he was on about.

1. Even the latest version of iOS is less capable than the oldest Android version out there (Eclair 2.1 I believe)
2. You can upgrade it with a stock version whenever you want if you don't want to wait for the manufacturer to take their time and roll out their customised version and
3. The irony... With Apple stuff, of course the manufacturer chooses when you deserve to get the latest version of the OS (seeing as they make it.) They also decide what you deserve to be able to do with your phone (and what you need and don't need), what kind of software you deserve to run on it, what kind of software you deserve to use on your computer to access your files, what country you need to live in in order to deserve giving them your money, and one or 2 other things.

In what way is iOS less capable? It does what it is designed to do, and I experience far fewer crashes on my iPhone than I did on my Android. Sure, there are limitations imposed by Apple, and some of those are frustrating, but overall the UI is smoother and more logical (to me). I mostly use my iPhone to run apps, and most of the top developers introduce on iOS first.

It only takes a few minutes to jailbreak an iPhone, which can enable a lot more features, but I have never seen the need. To have to root your Android phone to get the latest software is absurd. How many people are comfortable doing that?

The limitations in the iStore are not Apple's fault; it's the law in South Africa that prevents them selling certain items.

But android phone manufacturers also decide when you get the latest update? And at times they decide you can't have it at all (unless you [-]jailbreak[/-] root). And how is iOS less capable than the earliest version of android? This fanboy logic from android is very absurd.

My iOS 5.1.1 iPad 2 is different to my colleagues iOS 5.1.1 on her iPad 3 .. she's got dictation and a few other goodies which - although I can physically run it - Apple (the manufacturer) decided to limit my iOS.

Sure, some features aren't carried through when Apple feel that the older hardware won't deliver the performance they expect of their system. However, this is far preferable to the Android scenario. How many 18 month old Android devices have been upgraded to ICS (let alone Jelly Bean)? My 2-year old iPhone 4 will be upgraded to iOS 6 in a couple of months time (on the same day as every other iPhone 4/4S worldwide), and apart from Siri and some of the Navi features, will have all the new features.
 
It's definitely not that the Blackberry is a superior device(Android is definitely better), it's SA peoples need for affordable internet access that's driving the BB craze! Give people an option for affordable(uncapped) data on the other devices and this will change fast! Please give us a comparison to other similar markets worldwide!

There's also a lot of cool factor in BBM. Everyone wants to be on BBM, people giving out their BBM pins to random people on facebook (you know the ones who have a 600 friends they don't even know).

It's pretty much the same thing TBH - you're getting a watered down iOS 6 sans some of the new features.
 
I have the samsung Tab and the new ipad..... The ipad is just great. Never crashed to date. Never slowed down. no need to reboot.
I have all my music on it. no jailbreak. Loads of books on it. Just get your USA account if you really need to buy things. But you will find a free app for everything on the USA site.
No usb.... not a problem.... would have liked a sd card.
And if vodacom wakes up and get us tethering on it........hell it is bloody fast.
