Lol. Damn. So you are saying the only solution is to move out?

I read about the soap thing, but I just want to kill them and to deter their cousins from coming to my holy lawn.
 
It's lawn reno time again.

My lawn looks like absolute kak after the winter. Gonna try my best again this year to get it right.

Some pics of the current state. Will try and start next week.

Steps will be:
  1. Scarify to remove dead thatch with my trusty little scarifier.
  2. Put down enough water to soften the soil for the spike roller.
  3. Spike roller to aerate the lawn.
  4. Put down some lawn dressing/topsoil.
  5. Rake with a lawn leveler.
  6. Overseed the lawn and seed all the dead patches with Kikuyu
  7. Roll with the smooth roller.
  8. Water and some more water

Hoping for the best. Just need to get those troublesome spots to grow.
 
Looking good. I must retrench for pop up positioning, as my current pumps are not as strong as my previous DAB pumps.

I got both my lawnmower and weedeater working, so at least my garden looks neat again after our Cape Town winter.

Update: After 2 Weeks
These pics are after the first mow. Some spots started growing like crazy. Only took off a bit with my normal mower, and with the next mow I will set it lower again. Then maybe I can start mowing with my cylinder mower and make some stripes.

You can't take off too much of the grass blades per mow. The idea is to get it as low as possible with the cylinder mower.

Also, no fertilizer yet.

Only 2 weeks and it looks better then my lawn already. Well done

I need to do some compost this year but will wait a few more weeks till we hit the rainy season.
 
I always thought one had to drill some lekker core holes and fill it with river sand like they do on golf greens.

You get a core aerator that uses hollow tines instead of a spike roller. Hollow tining is best practice tho.
 
I have been struggling to get my grass going here in cape town. As soon as you stop watering for a while it all dies off because of the rock hard clay its stuck in. Decided to start seeding with White clover before winter and its been coming op everywhere. Lets see if it lasts our dry upcoming summer. Apparently white clover is good in clay and is more drought tolerant.

Ok cool. That is the advice I was given.

1. Hire de-thatcher and de-thatch,
2. Hire core aerator, and core some lekker holes,
3. Fill the holes with river sand and use a levelling rake (same day as the cores were drilled because if you leave it the grass will fill the holes),
4. fertiliser etc.
5. Set lawnmower to lowest level and mow it once a week,
6. Have a kick-ass lawn.

While I do admire a great lawn, it's a lot of work or very expensive to get it there.

Yeah 100%. So I have been looking into it my problem is that my grass is about 300 sqm. So I have a lot to cover and it is going to cost me an arm and a leg especially with the sand. I am still deciding whether it is worth it.
