Lawn Renovations

I sprayed my weeds with poison. Some died, some lived. Will respray this afternoon. Was not sure how much poison to spray on per weed.

This saturday, I want to fix my leaking irrigation pipe. Might even dig new trenches to reroute two of my current irrigation pipes.
 
Decided to install some irrigation at the back lawn of the holiday place. Bliksem, I forgot how expensive this can get.
Had to buy 200m of pipe. Did not want to run more than one pop-up per line. So had to run multiple lengths in the same trench. Each terminating further away than the last one.

Also installed a water meter on the pressure pump feeding the irrigation from the borehole tanks. Now my guy can keep a record of how much water we use from the 2 boreholes per sprinkler p/h, totals p/m, etc.

Next time do a closed loop, that will equalise the pressure in the whole line.

Yeah, but then there won't be enough pressure to get the max distance out of each. Or am I missing something?

Atm, each has its own ball valve to operate each one independently.
Do you mean by a closed loop that the pipe starts and ends again at the manifold, while still retaining each separate ball valve to operate them on their own?
Thus, eliminating the need to use that much pipe?

1 popup per line seems hectic, but I'm not sure what popups you using. Assuming the big guys considering the lawn size. If that is 25mm HDPE, you are looking at around 30 - 50l/min.

If you maybe using one of these popups then 1 per line makes sense:

Yes, closed loop means the pipe starts and ends at the same place. How many sprinklers do you have and what type?

Plan on using 7 x Orbit/Hunter pop-up rotating units.

There is a piece that is not fenced off, and wildlife roam freely. I also use this piece as a feeding station with some Aalwyn & salt blocks and bush pellets with Lucern now and again. I usually let my guy put out some chow a couple of days before I arrive in order to see some action while I am there.
Then I have a few lines of cattle electric fence to keep the wildlife off my lawn and out of my trees and plants.

We have pretty much all of the following wildlife that roam freely:
  • Impala
  • Nyala
  • Blou Wildebees
  • Kudu
  • Zebra
  • Bushpigs
  • Warthogs
  • Giraffe
  • Etc
And an absolute abundance of birds, the most amazing you will ever find. I will try and share some of the birds from our WhatsApp group. Absolutely insane

What do you guys think of my approach?
Overkill or insufficient?

You could split the sprinklers into 2 zones if you are worried about pressure. I'm running 4no. rainbird 5004 rotaries with 4no. normal popups on 1 zone.

It's not bad but imo, there is a lot of overlap.

#2 doesn't seem necessary since #1 and #3 touch. #3 could also move more down to cover more into #1 since it is overlapping #4 quite a bit.

#7 I would maybe move to the perimeter as well with 180 degree spread. The issue with overlapping from all the other sprinklers, whilst not doing harm, is you will probably get rapid growth there whilst the other sections of the lawn don't grow as quick, increasing your mowing frequency unnecessarily.

What I did with my back garden was draw the area to scale and then using a compass point set with the same scale marked off the coverage, re-arranging until I had minimal overlap. Luckily my areas are squares so it is a little easier. Your shape is slightly more challenging.
 
What compost do you guys recommend for the lawn? I see Culterra Compost 30 dm3 for R25 but lots of negative reviews about it.
 
I had to leave early the last time I was at the holiday place. I gave my guy all the instructions to finish the installation of the irrigation.

He is super chuffed with himself. He craves learning new things or skills. He sorted out all them sprinklers. By himself.
I am really fortunate and blessed to have him as a full-time employee. He is the garden engineer/domestic/butler all in one. I try and teach him how to do something by himself every chance I get. There are a lot of times when I could just do it myself, but then I would rather show him how to. Even when I get a contractor for air conditioning, plumbing, or electrical issues. He is there, lurking over their shoulders, learning with his eyes.

Anyway, I will post pics of the sprayers when I am there again.

Check your local area for guys who deliver topsoil or compost. Make double sure it is clean and free from weeds and kak. Then make sure again.

If I had to, I would try Culterra or BARK lawn dressing. Have done so in the past.
Stay away from Garden Master.

I use to hate these things. They're so damn loud, and our old place had the garden area right outside the bedroom window.

I use to go on a rampage. My wife thought I was mad. I was scared to use pesticide because of my dogs. I use to walk around in the night, holding a pair of garden scissors in one hand, watering can with a mix of dishwashing liquid and water in the other, and penlight in my mouth.

I stalked slowly, so as to not disturb the f uckers. Once I identified the general area, I poured out the sunlight mixture over where I thought the sound was coming from. They came up to breathe, and I used to chop them up up with the garden scissors. Then continue the stalk to the next area.

I'm so happy I moved from that place.
