I was at Govan Mani this weekend in the PMB mall (guessing specials run across the branches though) and saw they have the Samsung 46E7500 with 6 pairs of glasses (battery operated), 3 3D Blu Rays and a Samsung Galaxy Tab for R19K.

The only negative I really found with the E range is the (non essential) motion control. If you have people at varying depths in front of the tv, it seems to struggle picking up someone further back making the hand gestures. Bright light above the tv seems to impair it's motion recognition a little as well. Otherwise I WANT ME THAT TV!!!!! :D

Well if you want to forgo the gimmicky gesture/voice control, you could save quite a bit of bucks by going for the 46ES6600 e.g. http://www.catsdigital.co.za/46es6600-1.html

Better yet, chip in another 4 grand and get the 55" 55ES6200 e.g. http://www.catsdigital.co.za/55es6200.html or if 19K is your absolute cap, checkout the backlit (thicker) 55EH6030 e.g. http://www.catsdigital.co.za/55eh6030-.html

As has been mentioned you could also opt for a plasma which provide large screen sizes for your money ... http://www.catsdigital.co.za/60e550-.html but dont expect the same level of advanced signal processing (mainy motion handling) as the mid to high LEDs.

Is anyone aware of any good deals on the Samsung 51e550? The price on the 46e6200 looks really good. Decisions, decisions.....

game has it for 10K with 3 bd titles and 4 glasses.

i was going to go for this but 51" is way too big for a bedroom. Well thats what the SO said.

Thanks Iceman. Will go have a look.

Dionwired got it for R12k which I also thought was a bit too pricey.

I am considering 46ES6200 vs 51e550. I am upgrading from a 74cm CRT, so even 46" will be a BIG improvement. Was considering 46ES6600, but not sure that R4k extra is really worth it. I need to get HD PVR as well.

Probably not, only difference seems to be a more advanced signal processor e.g. higher CMR motion rating & micro dimming.

I need to get HD PVR as well.
If budget is limited, definately take this option. Will make way more of a difference than that between the two TV models.

Best value TV on the market. Similar to the legendary PS51D550 with a few extra features like SMART capability and RealBlack. Excellent SD quality where LCD/LED-LCD lacks. The PS51E550 is better than last year's D7000 mid-high end plasma.

Only mid range LED-LCDs will compare, like Samsung 6 Series and up. Under the right conditions though (dim lighting, night viewing etc. where most people will be watching) the plasma will win with sheer picture quality and contrast ratio. Smokes the LG 47" Cinema 3D according to owners of both.

R9,500 PS51E550 51" FHD 3D
R8,500 Samsung 40" FHD 3D 6 Series LED-LCD
R12,000+ Samsung 46" FHD 3D 6 Series LED-LCD

Easy choice IMO. I would only get LCD/LED-LCD for computer work.

thanks. I've got a Sony Bravia 3 40" LCD TV (not LED) . watching movies and general TV on HD PVR normally in a dimmed room and i can never get the picture to be "perfect"... i am always fiddling with the settings but can never get it right... i am a bit sceptical about going plasma due to burn in's that still occur and the quality of the picture. i have seen plasmas in the past so my opinion is based on 2-3 year old plasmas. i do believe that the tech have improved. i heard that plasma is being phased out, but don't know how true this is?

this TV seems like n good buy. would you say it would be a "major" upgrade if i go this route?

Plasma doesn't burn in any more.

Plasma is not being phased out.

It will be a massive improvement, especially under dim conditions. You probably won't have ever seen such good picture quality.

Will there be a big difference in picture quality between something like the 40eh5300 and the 40es6200?

Thanks, its the constant ticking in my mind if I should get the deal from makro for the ES6200 for R8500 or the EH5300 from Dion for R6000. Its a far stretch but I'm tempted and wondering if the difference will be noticeable.

Definitely if you're fussy about smooth motion.

Me, I hate judder. My natural eyesight doesn't have it, so I don't want to see it on my TV.

Is the difference huge? For non sport viewing ?
As before, really depends on what you watch and how apparent the differences are.

One example of where I often notice the difference is with Discovery HD channel. Most of the content is US based shot at 60Hz while being transmitted locally at 50Hz. The conversion requires cyclic frame dropping and its this which cases the picture to jerk (judder) during horizontal panning shots on normal 50Hz display. On a 100Hz plus TV like my D6000 or the ES6200, this effect is smoothed out.

The TV wont be used for DSTV any time soon, mostly will stream movies and series over my network.

Then possibly won't make that much difference to you.

As always best to go check it out yourself. Take some of your movies/episodes on a flash drive and go test them on the sets in-store.
