So I bought the PS51E550 last night. What a great tv! NOW I understand what people mean when they say the plasmas play SD content soooo much nicer than LCD. I was expecting my SDs to all look crap, and force me to start only watching HD; luckily I was wrong :) I highly recommend that model to everyone.

It's not only SD content. ;) Plasmas still have the best 2D picture quality. Thank goodness we still have them (against the beliefs of LCD naysayers claiming plasma is dying) while we wait for OLED. Plasmas have weathered the gap quite nicely since CRT (still unmatched in picture quality/blacks/colours/motion).

i currently have a 40" samsung 7 series LCD TV (LA40A750). I see Game are running a special on a 55" Samsung LED UA55EH6030. the screen size would suit me a lot better. would i notice much difference stepping down from a 7 series to a 6?

Apparently the EH6030 (a diluted version of the 6 series) gets whipped by the proper 6 Series, ES6200. I wouldn't be able to tell for sure since your A model is about 4-5 years old now which would suggest newer models would be better. Personally I don't find LCD technology has improved all that much since then although with LED backlighting there have been advancements made with micro dimming and such. On the other hand LED backlighting can lead to more light bleed and grey-blacks. I'd imagine you'd need to at least go for the proper 6 Series, perhaps take it a step further by going ES6600 for the micro dimming...

What about plasma? 51" FHD 3D for R9k, 60" FHD 3D for R16k...

Congrats ! How much did you get it for and where ?

Thanks man. I just popped in to Game after work. Picked up a tv and 3d blu-ray player for R9699. I was considering Game, but figured 699 for a blu-ray player is fair; and I wanted one.

I have a Samsung PS51E550 and got a Samsung LED UA46ES7500 for a bargain for the bedroom and have compared picture quality with SD, Hi-Def, and 3D.

Now this is midrange plasma vs premium 7 series LED and I have to say SD content looks better on the plasma, except for panning scenes where there is slight judder. HD and 3D looks much better on the series 7 LED.

Suppose theres some personal preference to that, me I prefer the SD picture on my 46D6000 over 51E550.

Not really apparent on broadcast content where the HDPVR is doing the upscaling, but on SD mp4s the D6000 provides a crisper/sharper picture. The E550 is not particularly good at upscaling, and combined with the plasma panel's dithering, provides quite a soft/fuzzy image compared to the D6000.

And yes, the E550s horizontal panning judder also drives me nuts (particularly in HD).

am looking to buy a Samsung UA55ES6200 LED for around R 18 900 at Dion Wired. From what I can work out, this is a current 6 series model, not an old one. is this correct? Anyone know of any cheaper places to purchase it? Sales guys tell me LED is better than Plasma as it is newer technology. Other option would be PS60E550 Plasma, 5" bigger, but plasma. Room is fairly dark, tv will be used mostly for sport, high definition movies and general tv viewing. any opinions on my choices?

Yes E is current. Next year's will be F I'd imagine.

You can take cheaper prices to Game and they'll beat them by 10% of the difference in price. Cats seems to be good too.

Bwahaha. Perhaps show them the top 10 Samsung TVs on www.televisioninfo.com and ask why +-6 are plasma. Or why real experts say plasma still offers best 2D picture quality. In other words the sales guys are wrong, but hey they're probably being paid a pittance, certainly no experts.

R2,000 cheaper too.

I actually came into this thread to post about that TV (the UA55ES6200). Was at makro germiston yesterday and they had 5 of those on special for 11999, insane!

Both are good choices that are closely matched. Would really come down to your personal preferences, so best you go compare them yourself first hand.

Personally I'd go with ES6200 if the first priority is sport, as it has better motion processing, but the E550 would have the edge for watching movie type content in a dark environment with its better shadow detail handling.

Agreed but the problem is motion-enhanced sport looks fake to many people. So one would need to check that out. Plasma obviously superior when comparing to 50/60Hz LCD.
