I wasn't really thinking of getting a plasma. I'm no expert on this things (ok I'm a noob :p ), but I hear people saying "burn in" etc. Why do you suggest a plasma, what are the advantages compared to LED TVs?

It's better than LCD. Burn in is a non issue.

You will see 95% of the top rated TVs are plasma. 51" FHD plasma is a massive bargain, and very popular around here. Owners who've done the comparisons will testify to its superior picture quality. We even have 4 year old plasmas beating new generation LCDs.

main one for me is screen size/price
but there a plenty of threads already on the subject and im sure pp can give you a quick rundown
 
Plasma is best if your viewing area is generally darkish. If it's rather on the bright side and you watch during the day then led might be better.

The one thing I've noticed with led (especially brands that use spva panels like samsung) is they don't have a good viewing angle - go off centre and the picture starts to look washed out.
 
Ok, so it seems plasma should also be an option. I'll mostly be watching sports (football and rugby) and gaming on the TV, question is , does a plasma handle both well? Also ideally I'd prefer a smart TV, are there smart plasma TVs for my price range?

PS51F550 Not sure about R8500 but you can get one for under R10K... it's 51" 3D and a smart TV

Yes, plasma response time is a fraction of that of LCD. And for the most part it doesn't employ gimmicks like 100+Hz/CMR to smooth motion, which only makes the picture look even more fake.

Legendary TVs, the best of both worlds - SD and HD.

See that the resolution is 1024x768. This is a 4:3/SD res. but they use rectangle pixels instead of square, which makes the physical size/aspect ratio 16:9 widescreen.

So picture 4x3 square pixels:

Vs 4x3 rectangular

And you get the idea.

The TV uses its scaling to figure out how to display HD correctly (since HD is usually 1280x720, 1366x768 - 16:9 widescreen res).

The key here is that if using it for HD, you'll want to sit 3m+ away.

If using it for PC or gaming, and for HD from less than 3m, I would look at 40/42" FHD 1920x1080 (16:9 res) LCD.

If using for SD and HD, from 3m, go for it. Its picture quality will smoke LCD.

Can anyone recommend a good 40" TV, budget R10k (max)? I've been looking at the SAMSUNG 40" (102cm) 3D Smart Full HD LED TV, which is available from Makro for R8499, although after doing some reading up, the one possible problem is the input lag seems quite high. Is there something better with lower latency (how's the LG models)? I'd primarily be using it for gaming and watching tv shows/movies, but also the occasional football/rugby match (so all round, with focus on gaming).

The reason I'm looking for around 40" is because I'm going to be quite close to it (around 2m away).

Any help would be appreciated!
 
My father says he saw an 55 inch LG led smart TV for 12999...have been out of it for a while so is this a decent price..? What else is there as alternatives plasma wise?
 
Does anybody own the SAMSUNG 40INCH SMART LED TELEVISION UA40F5500 ? What are your views on it ? I'm looking to get another tv and I'm thinking of getting this one.
 
I'm trying to decide between the LG 55LA6210 for R13k (Makro) or the LG 47ln5700 for R8500 (Dion Wired).

Does anyone here have the above mentioned 55inch and is it worth the price difference for the extras over the 47inch model (bigger screen, 3D although 3D is only a nice to have and not a must for me)?

I figured the 55inch is quite a good price seeing as how the 50LN5700 goes for about R9900 (Dion Wired).
