What about the Samsung UA50F6400 - Would you recommend the above 51" F5500 Plasma or the 50" F6400 LCD (based only on features, picture quality etc - assuming prices were comparable)?

I also have a room with lot of ambient natural lighting and we hardly ever draw the curtains. Watch a mix of SD and HD content: series, movies, cartoons but not much sport. A bit of casual gaming at 1-2hrs a week. Viewing distances range around 3-5m away.

The UA50F5000 will be the lesser of two evils. Both this LCD and PS51F5500 plasma have glossy screens, plasma being worse.

Ultimately you'll want to invest in good curtains if you intend doing a lot of daytime viewing.

LCD is brighter, so it's generally better for bright conditions. Until the sun sets... ;)

UA50F6400 is about R3-4k more than the PS51F5500, and is better suited for brighter conditions. While I don't have experience with this LCD, the plasma will win under dimmer conditions.

Perhaps the question should rather be, UA50F6400, or PS60F5500 60" FHD plasma... :twisted:

Reason why I asked about the UA50F6400 is that it may only cost me just R1k* more than the PS51F5500 and was wondering if the the spec upgrade is worth it.
*I still need to verify the price.

While I'm here, does anyone know if return/warranty policy is still based on the ridiculous premise that you keep the original box/packaging?

Unfortunately it usually is... If you have the space just stash the box in the garage.
 
Not for warranties as long as you've got the receipt you should be able to return it. Did it with my Sinotec.
 
I'm looking at buying the Samsung PS51F5500

Does it play 3D MKVs, and will that work over wifi, or do I need to route CAT5e cable?
Or does it only play 3D using a BD player?
 
Ok, out of interest- these Esquire deals often show Coby TVs for real cheap. Coby is a USA brand but other than that, I know nothing about them. How is the product (and picture) quality? Anyone have any experience with them? And please don't just say 'you get what you pay for' - some real facts and user opinions would be nice.

EDIT: nevermind, the reviews are overwhelmingly negative :-

Definitely not the PS51F4000. It will have a better picture quality than the UA50F5000, but it's HD Ready/1024x768 which is only good for further viewing distances, and a good mixture of SD and HD. Since you want HD mainly, you should look at a FHD telly.

Either save up to +-R8,500 for the real deal which everyone raves about (PS51F5500 51" FHD/1920x1080 3D SMART plasma), or settle with the LCD - which while FHD, won't have as good picture quality as the plasmas or as good motion handling.

Its benefits will be better for bright conditions (LCD is brighter) and a less reflective screen (but it's still glossy).

Does anyone know if Makro beats prices too? I would take this TV (Sammy PS51F5500) there because I would get 10% back from there in Standard Bank uCount points. That's about an extra ~R890 that will go towards my ps4 :).
