LCD and Plasma Bargains and Discussions thread

I got a budget of R10k, need recommendations as there is so many to choose from.

No SMART stuff.

primarily used for watching sports, sci fi and action packed movies and the occasional chick flick. maybe some gaming in the future.

I plan to buy a Roku (I have an apple tv but I am not impressed with it)

I am looking for picture and build quality.

Samsung PS51F5500 51" FHD 3D SMART plasma, if you can find one.

Otherwise you'll need to look at a Samsung 6 Series LCD minimum (should be able to find a 48" around your budget, such as the UA48H6200 or UA48H6400).

I'm sure there are great LG equivalents too.

Sony tends to offer best build quality.

What is your opinion on LG Plasma's, there Samsung F5500 range is hard to find. I see fotodiscountworld.co.za have the LG 60PB6900 for under R12k.

I played with one a week or two ago, might even be the one above. Beautiful picture, I also liked the menu and SMART system. I couldn't fault it.

I think the bottom line here is that it's a plasma, you'd be able to get one, and at a great price too.

Thanks! Online reviews seem good too. Samsung would have been the first option but the LG seems good value as well.

Do it! :)

One thing I did with the LG plasma I played with (and I believe it is the one you mentioned) was go through the National Geographic/Nature wallpapers on the Apple TV... Really, really good picture quality.

is SMART TV's actually worth it? I read that they are clunky and out of date quite quickly...hence why I was trying to avoid it.

You can't avoid it when you look at anything above entry level.

I think it's worth it, especially for streaming.

I have 2 smart TVs and never use the smart functions. It can't compare to my Roku and Droid box.

i have lots of windows and 3 sets of french doors for my living room area that lets in a lot of light. should i be worried about plasma and the screen reflections?

I think I saw "a" 51 inch Samsung plasma on special at the Wonderboom Makro for R9999 (this was 2 weeks ago though).
Its quite funny because its the exact same price I paid for my special some 2 years ago.

Yes, to be honest you should worry about LCD too as they all use glossy screens these days and are also reflective (less so than plasma).

Rather make sure you have good curtains... And/or arrange your room so that direct light doesn't fall on the TV.

Is this a good deal?

I've got a 32" Samsung which is around 8 yrs old now, I need to replace it as it's on its way to the grave. I don't have the greatest budget at the moment and thought this special looked pretty good.

TV will be for DSTV, nothing fancy. I have my PS3 hooked up which I use to stream from my PC.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks !

Slightly off topic. But why doesn't anyone bring in Vizio TVs. The seem like excellent value for money.
