LCD and Plasma Bargains and Discussions thread

I have to be honest - first time I've ever heard of your situation.

To my knowledge Series 5 is budget, Series 6 midrange and Series 7/8 is premium. In fact the only difference between 7 and 8 in the H is the curve in 8, otherwise they're the same.

Also never heard of them rebranding different Series local and abroad. Are you sure you don't have a Samsong from the side of the road? ;)

I've yet to see a plasma be *overall* better than my Series 7, *although* in honesty I haven't seen a Premium plasma. I see screen uniformity (though seldom to I watch black screens. I tend to watch a movie or turn off the TV) and can occasionally notice motion.

That said, image retention is the absolute worst thing about plasma and the reason I sold mine. I cannot cope with even a few seconds of the previous screen. To me the trade between an uneven black screen and two merged scenes for a few seconds is well worth it.

Now, I need to find someone like you that will accept budget obsolete technology for their high end screen to swap. Tag, although he will publicly say it, will not swap :(

Here is the one i returned:

Here is the same TV but with a lower model number:

What this all boils down to is the PA60H5000 is a great buy, that matches or exceeds TV's costing 2-3 times as much ( Depending on your own preferences).

If anyone is considering one, here are 2 threads where people discuss calibration settings, room lighting etc:

The PN60F5300B is the same panel as the PA60H5000 as found in these threads.

It amazes me how this bottom line keeps going over peoples' heads.

What's the viewing distance, and what are the sources?

Well currently most sources would be 1080p since there's not much UHD available atm, but there is 4k upscaling which works damn good on 1080p sources.

Viewing distance I would say is between 3 - 5 meters. It's in a bedroom not a lounge. So mostly watching in bed :)

What size/budget are we looking at? If we are to take the 60" FHD plasma at ±R10,000, then I take it we would be looking at the 40" UHD LED-LCD which is the closest match in price?

Looney i would definitely go for the samsung PA60H5000 with those viewing distances, you won't regret it!

Not saying I didn't believe you - I've just never heard of Samsung changing Series between regions. I know LG do it which is annoying when trying to compare, but the fact that Samsung does it disappoints me mildly :/

I also understood the difference with Series 8 is the curve - so odd really that this is sold. If I compare my H7000 (below) it's actually slightly better on most counts. It''s got the cinema black option that weirdly your Series 8 missed out.

Samsung UE-46H7000 makes it arguably the best 1080p television that money can buy among 2014 models, thanks largely to its outstanding black-level response and contrast performance.

Interestingly, the H7000 isn’t even Samsung’s non-4K range-topper, but we think its picture quality edges out the step-up curved H8000 series due to the former’s slightly deeper and more uniform blacks

They also imply the step up Series 8 is curved

The 4K upscaling of 1080p video on the Sammy 7500 UHD and LG 860T is excellent. Genuinely looks better than Full HD. Upscaling below 1080p doesn't add anything. I can't understand how someone can prefer a 5 series plasma. I have owned 2 and of course plasma has its benefits, but they do not outshine any midrange Sammy or LG UHD LCD overall.

Well budget would be 15k, ideally 55".

I already bought the LG 55UF770T from Dionwired.

I just wanted to know from you what you would have recommended based on my viewing conditions (light room), distance approx 3 - 5 meters, sources 1080p.

So you say any plasma will be leaps and bounds ahead of any LCD?
Without offending, you feel the budget plasma will easily be superior to a premium LCD?

Maybe tell him - I offered him a PA60H5000 to swap his HU8000 and he laughed at me. What I do know though, is that your and his comments totally contradict each other.

Forget the price.

Tag11 had a Series 8 plasma and bought a Series 8 LCD. He says there are things he prefers about the plasma and things he likes about the LCD. Call the Series 8 plasma the winner, but they're fairly close. When offered a Series 5 over his Series 8 LCD, he laughed ... of course he wouldn't do that.

Now Terumo buys the Series 5 that Tag11 laughed at when offered ; and says it'll easily walk all over his 8 Series LCD. They have two opposite viewpoints on the matter. Unless you can persuade Tag11 to swap his crappy Series 8 LCD for the H5000 plasma?

You're selective reading is letting you down, the TV i took back (ua55hu8500) is a rebranded ua55hu7500, which is not a premium class LCD tv but a mid range one.

Nowhere did i say this budget H5000 plasma will destroy any LCD, because frankly i don't have a top tier LCD to compare to this Plasma. But the one i had (ua55hu8500) , did lose comfortably :D

But Tag11 has, so we both came to the same conclusion in our respective comparisons.

Nothing special though, 2 table lamps, one on each side of the couch. I wouldn't call it a cave :P

Wow, Dolby, you're the master of quoting out of context and digging up whatever little comment is made to try and convince yourself that your theory is correct.

Dude, if you prefer LCD then just buy LCD - why try to convince everyone else that Plasma is inferior?

As for my experience and preference, let me try clarify.

I would not swap my 65HU8700 for a 60H5000 for a number of reasons. Firstly, I'm pretty shallow, I want the latest technology and the curved screen looks cool (even when it is off!), I also like the fact that it is UHD even if the only UHD content I've seen so far are demos I downloaded and some personal GoPro footage. Then, if I paid R47,000 for something, why would I swap it for something that costs around R10,000 ??? That is just silly - I'm more likely to just buy the next model (J) this year or next year (K?) and suck-it-up with my less than perfect screen for now. Anyway, for me, the extra 5" is also a major factor. My living room is huge.

The idea that ANY plasma is better than ANY LCD is just stupid - I've seen those Telefunken and Sinotec plasmas, and back in the day Samsung had really crap plasmas too compared to Fujitsu and Panasonic - each screen, technology, model needs to be considered on merit and value based on it's chosen purpose - I hate the fact that the Panasonic plasma in my bedroom has no tuner and no WiFi, but I absolutely love how perfect it is for BluRays and playing PS3 and PS4 games - I also love how well it handles SD content from DStv and any sport content - significantly better than my 65HU8700 - but then this LCD screen has all the bells and whistles and other benefits, so I can forgive the faded colours from side angles and less than perfect motion handling.

To be clear, my 64F8500 plasma died and Samsung offered me the 65HU8700 as a warranty replacement. I said at the time I didn't want LCD but they did not have stock of the plasmas to give me. I accepted it based on the fact that I had no choice and consoled myself with the knowledge I was getting newer tech, UHD, WiFi support, better media handling, a better remote (yes, it's a factor!), and a screen worth 30% more than I paid a year before - so it was a good deal. Just before they delivered the new screen (the Samsung support was shockingly bad! I had to chase it up for weeks!) a dealership had 1 plasma in their storeroom and offered it to me - I almost took it - but as I said, I'm a sucker for new tech and knew I would pine over the lost opportunity for a significant upgrade (in value/price) if I didn't take the newer LCD.

Was I disappointed? Perhaps with a few minor aforementioned issues - but overall I'm satisfied. Each person is different, I know I will buy a 75" or 84" within the next year or two - so why stress about this? Will it be Plasma? Unfortunately, no, but not by choice - I'm hoping it will be OLED, but if they are still at crazy prices (and I don't think they're bigger than 55" yet) then it will have to be LCD/LED.

True.

I thought IQ would come into play rather than the fact of the monetary value

Postman, you never did answer my question which TV you would have recommended between a Plasma Full HD and a Led LCD UHD. I'm just curious what you would have recommended me had I asked you first :)

Any particular settings in those threads you tried and you were happy with? I tried a few and all the recommended ones just look so dull to me. Surely they can't be right?
