LCD or Plasma

I have plasma in the living room and lcd in the bedroom, use both for movies and sport, the plasma looks better and was allot cheaper than lcd. I do not use HD. So if I must choose, i will say that I prefer the "warmth" of the plasma compared to the "crisp" look of the LCD for my application.

My setup is much different, I have a 86cm CRT in the living room (that is as big as CRT gets) and in the bedroom I have s3>< :p

Personally, I prefer the crispness of an LCD. I do agree, though, that plasma has its benefits. Just a pity about the ridiculously high power consumption of plasma displays (300W+) vs. LCD (anything from 80W)

If plasma was that good then computer monitors would be plasma.
But it is not.
*It is cheap.
*Dies out faster.
*Uses a lot more power than CRT.
*Does not do dense pixel setups well.

It doesn't die out faster, that is the whole point. It will last longer.

It does use a bit more power, about 80W more. Large LCD Panels also use much more than what you would think.

That last point is what helps make a SD picture appear to be acceptable on a HD screen.

LCD is expensive
Blacks are worse on an LCD
LCD lags
LCD get dead pixels
LCD usually has a lower viewing angle

Ja... i don't like LCDs for that reason. A dead pixel would irritate the crap out of me (maybe that's a good thing)... but anyway... what am I saying... I'm working on an LCD right now.

Har Har, I bet you can have it on top of that crt if you wanted to, thats a big @$$ crt!
The embarrassing part was when we bought it at Game. Firstly it came on this big trolley that they normally use only to get stock onto the shelves. Then we rolled this huge trolley with squeaky wheels through the mall to the parking lot. The closer we got to the car the more real the problem became. No matter if you have the seats down that TV does not fit into a large hatchback. Had to call my friend who has a land rover to come pick it up... :o

No, it will die faster than even crappy OLEDs. LCD is king here because if the backlight goes it is easy to get a new one.

It uses a lot more power, even more than CRTs, and they top LCD by a longshot.

Big pixels have never ever been a good idea, so no, rather get more pixels even if many of them show the same value because the input stream is SD.

Apart from all that why don't we have plasma PC monitors ? If they are so wonderful ? Perhaps it is because they are just full of hot air....

No, blacks are better on them, you get some sets that have a black so dark you look at the color of a black hole and think to yourself, my that is a gray affair...

The only time blacks get better on plasma is after the first few minutes of watching as the plasma starts to die out and the thing fades to black.

LCD lag is overrated, I have an old 15" Acer LCD at home with a whopping 35ms response time and guess what, no lag visible, thats cause it is active matrix.

LCDs had a lower viewing angle but not anymore. They are so amazing you can almost see them around corners these days.

Thats why you always have them switch on ANY LCD device in the store and you do a proper test of it. If you spot dead pixels you ask for another one. Don't buy if it has dead pixels. Or you can buy the ones will a type 1 pixel warranty policy - like Philips displays with their perfect panel warranty. Just one dead or stuck subpixel and you get a new one.

Remember, this is a display we are talking about. You are gonna be spending a lot of time looking at it. Fork out the extra cash and make sure it is worth it.

Who cares if it died out faster?

The life is generally 60,000 hours. At my viewing time of an average of 3 hours per day, it's still going to last me till 50 years.

And if yopu watch TV more than me, say 8 hours per day? 20 years !

How about if you put it on 24 hours per day for fun? You're still getting 6 years ....

hmm...the new plasma TV's has just about the same operating life span compared to the LCD screens

Same here :D, I bought the 42" while looking for something else, and only realized my planing mistake when we got to the car, I had to go back home first to get the bakkie.

Ja, but in the long run it is still more expensive because of all the power it consumes. You are better off using a LCD and save on electricity. Thats the double whamy of Plasma. Watch more and it dies our plus sucks too much power.

So basically, if you are going to watch very little TV then get plasma. Preferable get it if you are never going to watch TV at all. ;)

Up until a year ago, blackslevels were inferior. Apart from not reaching ultimate black - they lacked in the area of black levels and details.

I've got a Gigabyte 19" LCD with 8ms and I can see lag, with my bad eye site and not even looking for it ;) That said, I haven't noticed it on my 5ms 22" Samsung at home.

Plasma has some ghosting issues that I do not pick up on the LCD, but it's a cheap plasma so perhaps its a quality problem.

i knew i was gonna get a 42", but didn't realise the box was gonna be so big. my GF had to go back into macro to get some rope - my hatchbacks boot wouldn't close!

Mmmm, perhaps because it is a Gigabyte ? Samsung and Acer are better brand therefor you can expect better quality.

Ja, again - it depends on what brand you buy. I but the cheapest pretty much of anything, except displays, cause I look at them a lot.
