LCD Resolution, is this possible?

You should be able to do it by changing the setting in the graphics card setup - through nVidia Control Panel or ATI Catalyst Control Centre - depending on the card you have. Which card do you have?

If nVidia, then go to the nVidia COntrol Panel and select Advanced View. Then select Change Flat Panel Scaling, and select your option - try the different ones to see which works best for you.

ATI is a similar setting under Digital Panel Properties -> Attributes (or something similar)

You will lose picture quality though as far as i know.

Not if, as he describes, you run 1680 x 1050 as a "smaller" screen with black borders around the 1680 x 1050 screen.

You are right though, if he wants a stretched 1680 x 1050 image on the screen (to take up all the real-estate). But why would someone want to do that?

I just tried it on my Samsung 2333SW and you don't loose any quality as long as you change the scaling in the nVidia control panel - gives you a black border around the edge of the LCD... if you don't change the scaling, then it looks awfull!

Not sure why you'd want to do this though at a lower than native resolution?

See pics here

I didn't capture one at 1680x1050 with scaling on, 'cos it looks cr@p and no-one should be using it... :p

Does scaling fix the aspect ratio as well?

Yes it does - my desktop picture is 1920x1080 (fixed) so it does squash a bit - the icons, etc. look sharp though, just like they'd be on a native 1680x1050 LCD.

I guess you could also apply this to the gaming folk

Some people dont have powerful enough GFX for games to run in 1920 x 1080, but would like the luxury of a big screen for maybe watching movies, series etc. then they can just tweak the settings for when they play games.

just a thought

:)
