LCD versus Plasma TV pricing

thank you, at last someone who knows what he is talking about when it comes to LCD vs Plasma- the salesmen at Hifi corp always tell you that plasma is junk, only go for LCD, you making a huge mistake buying that one sir blah blah blah...

From what I've seen, a plasmas picture seems be a bit duller than an LCD's picture, especially when the TV is in a brightly lit area. So how can it be clearer, have greater contrast, truer blacks and greater colour depth when it looks dull compared to an LCD?

For PC use, which would be better? 50" Full HD plasma or LCD?

Nice article, now hopefully the next one will be about the different features punted on LCD'/Plasma's and their effect/value on price. Thus is it worth paying for.
I thought that this is what the article is basically about?

It lists the generally accepted pros and cons of each. Now off course people are going to come in here and be fanboys of one over the other because they've seen better results on x brand LCD over y brand plasma (or vice versa) - but that's not the point of the article. The point is to put buyers in a more generally informed position from the start - and they may then go out and see which is best for them rather than having to accept the salesman's word.

No it's a genneral comparison relating sizes not feature's at all. I would like to see a article of Spec's v Price.

What is ...... worth?

In a nutshell.

Plasma
Pros:
  1. Richer Colours
  2. Better viewing angles (tho LCD has caught up a lot on that point)
  3. Better contrast (i.e. better quality blacks)
Cons:
  1. Pixel sizes. It's difficult, if not impossible, for plasma pixels to be less than 0.5 or 0.6 mm in size. To achieve a resolution that is competitive the screen sizes must be bigger.
  2. Plasma pixels are also subject to burn-in.
  3. Plasma screens require more power than their LCD counter-parts

LCD
Pros:
  1. Small pixel sizes. Why you don't see plasma screens on cameras, cellphones, etc.
  2. Less power consumption
  3. Image stability. Plasma screen tend to cause eye fatigue if you're sitting too close.
Cons:
  1. Viewing angles. (It's getting better but there's still room for improvement)
  2. Contrast performance. Especially when it comes to the depth of the blacks. (Again, it's getting better but I doubt it'll ever be as good as CRT or plasma)
  3. Latency. Much better these days but still a problem. Plasmas have no latency issues.

IIRC, did the EU not ban the sale of Plasma screens because of their high(er) power consumption? If that is the case then Plasma screens are on the way out anyway. Why spend lots of money on soon to disappear technology?

i'll stick to LG lcd tv, can't complain about it at all.plays well on computer

Before I bought my 50” TV, I was sure that it would be an LCD. But I was surprised (this was early this year) when I started reading and doing research that the “conventional wisdom” that LCDs were far better than plasma was in fact not wisdom at all. I ended up buying a plasma.

5 years lifespan on plasma gas.

What should also be mentioned is that the native color for an LCD is white and for Plasma it is black. Hence, an LCD works much harder to display black whereas a Plasma works much harder to display white.

Do you shop for TV's often at Hi-Fi Corp then? :)

haha, yeah I know, im a techno-geek

I think that is why salesmen always punt LCD- in a store where you have multiple fluorescent tubes, you don't get an accurate representation... you need to go look at it in someones living room, then judge it

Just a note on better viewing angles .. I have a plasma (which I love to bits) and an LCD but the viewing angle is only better in dimly lit rooms for plasma .. In daylight the glass reflective screen makes it a little tougher to view than my LCD

my experience anyway .. take it or leave it

utter rubbish ... those were the 1st gen ... lcd and plasma are comparable in lifespan ... like the article indicated ... ill take a high def plasma ... the best tv set in the world is a pioneer elite kuro plasma set ... pity they dont make them anymore

As I think was already mentioned ... dont compare a well lit sales area to your uplit / dimmed Living Room .. always try to view both in the "Most normal" viewing environment.

My Plasma is leaps ahead of my LCD in this regard .. I always find myself fiddling with the brightness on the LCD (depending on the movie type) and I almost never fiddle with my Plasma

It all depends on what you want to use it for. If you want the best possible picture for your SD & HD movies, have more than one viewer at home sitting at different angles, can control the lighting where the TV is, go plasma. If you game alot, have a brightly lit room and no curtains, 90% of your viewing will be in HD, go LCD.

The whole resolution debate is null and void for screens smaller than 46". And if you have a Full HD LCD, did you know that your motion resolution(the resolution at which a moving object appears) is actually less than that of a HD Ready Plasma. Yes, you have been conned for forking out that extra hard earned cash, for a display that can only display a Full HD image if it is a still image.

I bought a Samsung 63" 7 Series Plasma...it costs a bit more than the one used in the article (it's a 6 series, mines a 7 and it makes a difference in price) and it's worth every cent. If you want BIG screen, go plasma....else, look at the 55" LCD LED TV's. They're VERY nice :)
