LEaving for OZ

I don't understand why you guys give him a hard time? Because he's white and leaving the country? He obviously likes South Africa, it's a beautiful place who wouldn't. It's been run by a bunch of idiots that are clearly not far up the evolutional chain; not his fault?
Thanks for the support. I never for one second started this thread or replied to other posts for *****s and giggles at all. I feel very strongly about this issue.

Hope you all the best Marine1! It is a long journey to get to the final stepping stone. We finally sold the house and plane tickets are booked for the 17th of May to Brisbane. Suddenly the fairytale became reality and I am stressing BIG time. I struggle to sleep at night. I suddenly realized that I will be leaving so many dear friends and family behind, most of them I will probably not see again. But, on the other side, I am soo excited about my new opportunities...

It is a tough and lengthy process, but just bear with it... When you reach the end you will almost wish it took a bit longer...(or maybe it is just me), but, you will feel relieved that all the effort actually paid off. And then you will close your eyes, fall into the great unknown and hope for the best....
Yeah, thanks man. I wish you and your family all the best there. I have lived in the US for some time and unfortunately came back but do regret the return. One thing I can say is that once you are there, embrace your new life and know that what you are doing is for the sake of your kids. Kind words you posted. Just remember that in OZ there are many ex SA's and they are only too happy to help. Funny how we stand together when abroad but yet here we cannot even agree on the simplest of things.
I once again wish you the best in your new life.
;)
I have family in Sydney and Melbourne and they seem very happy there. Sure its tough but life in general is tough.

Thanks Marine (mate ;) ), your words also helps a bit in easing the internal struggle happening right now. Stange how you feel all confident when it is all still on the horizon and how your start to worry when it actually happens. In absolutely no way am I regretting what I am doing, I just suddenly feel very alone. It is heart warming to know to know other people have lived through it (like you from the US - must have been a shell shock!!) and survived. I've read a lot about embracing the new culture and I am all for it. Remember where your'e from, but dont live it. Learn the new ways. Learn the new accent (Hahah, might take a while - trying the G'day mate at the office nowadays).

Any idea where you whould be heading to when you do go?

Just had a quick browse thru this thread.
I'm originally a Kiwi that then moved to Oz for 8 years and now been S.A for the last 4 years.

Sleeper/Marine all the best over that way.
You'll easily spot your fellow countrymen over there just look for the oke thats still lighting his barby/braai with wood and making all that smoke.

Sleeper an hour north of Brissy is a place called Mooloolaba/Maroochydore
not a bad spot for a bit of time out.Mooloolaba was where i was living before coming here.

When you need adsl this is AA1+ company for service/connection/prices etc

We are looking at Melbourne. I have some family there so it just seems like the right choice. Met with the immigration agent yesterday and although the cost is very high (about R50k for both their fees and the lodgment, skills assesment, english exam.) it just feels like it is the right thing to do. I do not want to wait for the ***** to hit the fan here and have no back up plan.

Have you written the english exam? I've heard it's a shocker; a little hearder then one expects.

Not exactly unlimited but you don't get cut off either...once your monthly data rate is reached you get shaped back to slower speeds(64Kb) for an extra 3GB above your plan then further restrictions after that.

Those data plans are ONLY for download data also.....upload isn't counted against your monthly quota.
+ i never before heard of this Local + International split before being here,so theres none of that either.INTERNET is INTERNET.

Is a good company that i used over 4 years ago and would use again 2moro......Don't think too many people would say that about any S.A telcos huh

That's a bit better, but still... I get uncapped, unshaped, unrestricted, unmetered, unmonitored ADSL2+ for just under R300 p/m here. I burned 100GB in one day once - the ISP didn't even notice.

Hehe when I tell people here about that, they simply won't believe me. Their minds just cannot process the possibility of such a stupid system.

yeah..Its a competition problem here or lack of for them still to be getting away with that bs.
Oz was high price Telcom monopoly, until the competition moved in.

I guess S.A's kinda unique also tho as the Oz providers don't have people running around ripping off cables out of the ground.
People that don't have jobs they can get unemployment benefit, goverment here would be broke in a month if they paid out that amount here.
So its hard to compare life in 1 place that does'nt have the problems faced by another.

Yip

Im actually bored of downloading these days, never thought it would happen.

I've run out of things to download too :D Actually, I've run out of storage space - all my externals are full and I have a few hundred hours worth of quality viewing to catch up on. I now only download the shows I watch and documentaries if they interest me.

Same here!Downloading anything and everytyhing really fills the hdds quick, so I rather download what I may actually watch.

I have a rapidshare premium so use that a lot to do my downloads also gives excellent speeds.Love the fact it takes a couple of minutes for a tv show

That's what I've been doing! I just don't get time to watch it!

Took me 6 minutes to download a 700mb torrent last night. Good enough for me...

I'm part of a couple of specialist obscure film and TV torrent forums, and tend to be uploading two or three gigs every day, 24/7, as well as pulling down things I want.

I wouldn't know how much I upload/download - because I don't bother counting :P

Have about 4 or 5 unsecured free local wireless networks that are available for use, and I simply sit on and use their signal, as well as my own..

The days of freaking out and counting megs or even thinking about 'a cap' are long gone.

Without 'Telkom' in the picture, the internet truly becomes what it should be.

LoneGunman, same here. The only reason I know I did about 100GB in one day is because I had about 100GB free when I left for work in the morning, and when I got back the disc was full :D

Are these free because they're unsecured or part of a free community/area wifi project?
