Leaving SA for good

I agree for the most part with leaving to see if theirs something better out there. As for the patriotism bs, how do you expect the younger generation to have any of that if they learn about Danie Botha or the like in history? History as a subject is dead so unless you teach your own kids about anything this country has been through it aint gonna happen.
A true patriot is willing to die for his country, guess Lancelot is too if he's so hell bent on staying and hoping things will improve merely because of optimistic people.
 
I wish I had the option available to move overseas if things go South in South Africa.
My family fled Zimbabwe when mad Bob was given his throne and people also pointed fingers.
Where's your patriotism? How can you desert your country?
I'm sorry but patriotism means nothing when the leaders of your country are determined to ruin and lay waste to the country and it's citizens for their own personal gain.

What pains me is that the people who stay and pretend to be patriots are such hypocrites !
They do nothing to fix the country that they say they support and are loyal to.
They sit on their lazy asses and let the ruling party run the country into the ground.
That's not patriotism - that's called "living in a comfort zone".
I'm of the opinion that the South African's that stay and complain about ex-pats pointing fingers are just jealous.

I'm staying for as long as I can but I'm by no means patriotic.
For those that do go - good luck! I hope you do well in the country you picked and I appreciate the feedback you give and for sharing the reasons you left.
 
I worked in UK for just 2 months sometime last year. I was working on contract. Money was awesome but after working everything out it worked out to the same thing in SA. So I packed up and headed back home. :)

The world is your oyster, go wherever it pleases you. Just don't tar and feather the country you came from when you are gone (as was said here before). I can't stand these twits that leave SA and then post on SA forums how crap things are in SA.

Now for the other part of me...bye don't let the door hit you on the arse as you leave.

PS. I could get an European passport quite easily as my father is a Portuguese citizen, but I don't want to. I am a patriot but am not willing to die for anything (except to save my partners life).

Agree.

My Dad works in the States (is now up for his green card soon) and he can only biatch about SA when things are going well for him in the States. But as soon as things go bad for him (ie work), then all of a sudden the States is worse than Zim.

Your lucky to have a Plan B - its my goal to have my Plan B soon (busy studying) but I have no intention to leave. I would rather move to Pofadder (I'm being serious, actually trying to buy a house there) than leave this country. But I'm also not stupid, if government installs Zim2.0, I will not hang around to wait for bug-fixes.

Finally managed to figure out my logon credentials...
I'm typing this out rather late in the evening from my house in Toronto,Canada livestreaming 702 talk radio catching up on the Cyril Ramaphosa win.
It has been nearly 7 years since I left SA for Canada. I'm a Canadian citizen how and started a family here as well.

If there is some interest in an update or questions ask away and I'll update this thread.

Weird to see this post as I had a friend call me from Canada two evenings ago, he had emigrated there some thirty years ago from SA, and engineer. During our discussion, he lamented emigrating and said that he would have had a better life if he had stayed in SA, even with all the problems adding that CANADA also has their unique set of problems.

Just my 2 cents.
 
I have two friends living and working there now, only ever to come back for holidays. Both of them purchased houses there, one has started a family. In the beginning the only complaint was the snow, but that became a way of life.

Despite the issues in SA: Move towards a goal, don't just move to run away from a problem.

EDIT: oops, 7yr old thread. Congrats on the citizenship OP! Please post more about life that side and all the oddities.
