LED or LCD

What do you guys think of these? (all from Makro):

Sinotec 47" (119cm) Full HD LCD TV - R8k

SAMSUNG 37" (94cm) Full HD LCD TV - R6k

SAMSUNG 40'' (102cm) Full HD LCD TV - R7k (I'm keen on this one.... - I'm Samsung fanboi btw)

Sony 40'' (102cm) FHD LCD TV plus HD PVR Decoder - R8.5k

LG 42" (107cm) Full HD LCD TV - R7k

p.s. Need one to replace the 74cm Samsung CRT in my lounge. Seating will be 3 to 4 metres away from the TV. It will be used mainly for sport (football) on Dstv SD (probably HD at a later stage) and watching HD & FHD files via a media player. I've already got a 27" for the PS3 and a 22" for the PC - both Samsung FHD LCDs.

p.p.s Why does an expensive Samsung have a 12 month guarantee but a cheap Sinotec has a 5 year guarantee ???

1 answer.

Sport and SD DSTV = plasma.

Makro/Game have the Samsung 50" Full HD plasma for R9999.

I saw this LG and the picture quality is utterly amazing for the price. I personally was blown away anyway. Definitely looks like a bargain.

This is a good point...although Sinotec has to do something. Their TV's look like trucks compared to Sony/Samsung Lambo's imo. Not very pretty.

+1 with postmanpot(?).Plasma is the way to go for tv/sport.Hd doesn't look to shabby either.

Hey guys and gals,

I am looking for advice on what to buy. Budget makes a difference, but I would rather spend a little bit more for quality. Basically two questions:

1) LED or LCD, did some research and saw there is about a 3k price difference between the two. But like I said I don't mind spending the extra if it is worth it.

2) Sony or Samsung. I am a big Sony fan, but can you give me reasons why Samsung is better or just as good. Besides Samsung being cheaper.

I will basically be using the TV for watching my HD movies and series via Med8ter multimedia player and he TV will be placed in my room.

And do you guys have any suggestions ?

It's not an 'LED' TV...It uses LED backlighting, but is still nonetheless an LCD television.

I've picked that up on the forum. I probably watch 2 maybe 3 live football matches per weekend. Besides that, I never even switch my on TV. It will be used more for watching HD & FHD (currently using my 27" for that) so I was leaning more towards a FHD LCD to enjoy FHD content. Has the quality of Plasmas improved? A few years ago I watched a football match on family members R20k 40-something inch plasma and there was this ghost effect - like a white 'tail' after the ball and 'shadows' behind players if they were moving fast. I wasn't impressed tbh.
R10k is slightly out of my budget (I was leaning towards around R7k) but a 50" in my lounge would be awesome though. . .

Yeah, it's the same price as the 40" Samsung but you get an extra 2". The only non-Samsung appliances in my home are my kettle and toaster. I'm thinking an LG tv is gonna feel out of place ;-)

I've noticed that with some of the 'cheaper' brands. The 5 years vs. 12 months guarantee still seems rather odd though.

Just got my elchepo 32" lcd yesterday (R3K) and really impressed. End of day it comes down to what you want to use it for.I

Could you perhaps give me the model number, i would like to read up on it, is this the same tv where i can plug in a HDD?

You don't have to worry about FHD, since the 50" plasma on special is full HD. If there was only HD ready, and you needed Full HD, then yes I'd recommend FHD LCD. Generally, FHD plasma has been a lot more expensive than LCD... Until now.

You sure your family member's TV was plasma, and not LCD? The reason people buy plasma for sport/motion is because plasmas don't suffer from ghosting like LCDs. Maybe older plasmas (not that I am aware of) but certainly not new plasmas.

If R10k is too much then I urge you to still check out the HD ready Samsung PS42C430 42" plasma. Maybe from your viewing distance you won't notice HD vs FHD. And you can save some bob too.

go for a fhd samsung lcd, perhaps older lcd tvs have issues when it comes to sd and sport but i have 2 samsung lcd (one led) fhd tvs and neither of them have issues with sd dstv and sport.

Which model numbers?

Usually for decent sport on LCD you need 100+hz motionflow, found in higher end models that cost quite a bit more than the likes of Sony EX400 series, Samsung 5 Series, etc.

got the 46" series 6 (UA46C6200) and the series 5 32" (c530)

would recommend both tvs to anyone, even sd dstv and sport on the series 5 is excellent despite the the lack of motion flow, as i said before, perhaps sport and sdtv look crap on older or cheap lcd tvs but on sumsungs you have no worries, when i was looking for a 32" my options were the ex400 and the series 5, after comparing both instore and having a look at a friends ex400 i went with the samsung because of the superior media player (mkv, avi support), sd dstv aslo looked better on the samsung imho.

Don't have model but like all the sub R4K products it being discontinued (hence the price).

No.

For how we use this TV that was not an issue as I have a standalone LG PVR that can do this, but I need to buy another TV for my wifes small business and I will get one that can do this. The feature alone is worth twice the price difference.

Can also say after my first weekend with it that on 32" you cannot see the difference between 720p vs 1080p in a large room like ours. Our unit is 50cm from the ceiling (old flat with high ceiling) and that also makes a difference. For a bedroom its very comfortable.

(EDIT: Some links to explain the Optimal Viewing distance:

For the lounge I won't settle for less than 42" and even the 50" is sounding more practicle. The 32" screen is the same height as our 72cm TV but is the width of the actual TV. So its not much of an upgrade :)

Oh and one important thing: I got a free bracket with mine. Consider that when purchaseing as they are > R300 and mounting it on the wall made all the difference.

in that case your best bet is a fhd 32" samsung lcd (c530)

by far the best built in media functionality on any tv of its kind, avi, mkv, mpeg4... all play no problem, subtitles are supported aswell.

Go down to Ster Digital Sound and Vision in Canal Walk. They have awesome TVs at awesome prices. They are getting in a Telefunken Full HD plasma for R5999 later this week. Telefunken uses Samsung panels.
