LED vs Plasma

Just out of interest. I've just come from Canal Walk and saw that Game was selling the Samsung 43" plasma for R4799 (as advertised). They also have the Samsung ps51E490 for R8999 whereas Dionwired is selling the same Samsung 51" plasma for R5500. When I mentioned this to the salesman at Game, he was willing to beat the price as well.

Lucky you, because the one for R5500 was the display model. The new ones were for R6900. Salesman told me they're selling the current range out and not getting more stock because the new model will be available in June. They do have the series 8 plasma though.

Yeah, those adjustments may affect my gaming.

I wish FHD plasmas weren't so expensive. They must look amazing.

I'm also still concerned about IR and burn-in. Some people on this thread and others have stated that it's no longer an issue, and others have said that is occurs quite frequently and is annoying to get rid of.

Some burn in is permanent.

If you plan to use your plasma as a pc monintor, maybe LED is better choice. Although, LED/LCD also get burn it, it's easier to get rid off than with plasma. My 30 inch Dell got burn in with side of menu, I set up a screen saver which changes colours rapidly and it seems the burn in went away but it took months of that to get it like that.

My 6-7 yr old plasma has a little burn in from DSTV banner/and BBC logos, but it's not noticeable when watching movies.

Conclusion
It's hard to draw wider conclusions about Samsung and Panasonic plasmas' burn-in fighting characteristics from this one inadvertent test, so I'll just stick to the three plasmas here. If you're buying a TV and want to use it as an occasional PC monitor I would still recommend using an LCD, but gaming and occasional Web browsing on a plasma is fine. The fact that these effects faded over time should give you some reassurance that this is not a permanent issue for a modern plasma TV. If it doesn't, by all means get an LCD.

But despite the ever-decreasing concerns about burn-in there's one reason I will always pick a plasma over an LCD: image quality. For the money nothing can beat a plasma for deep black levels, wide viewing angles, uniformity, and motion-blur-free gaming. Until OLED TVs become affordable -- and word is they may also be susceptible to burn-in -- I will be choosing a plasma for use at home.

Thank you for sharing.

My pleasure. It's good to know real facts and that burn in is not resolved just all but defeated with special technology in most plasma TV's but some still do fail. ;)

Seriously - Read that article a few days ago. It really helped. It's amazing to see the difference between competing plasmas.

I don't see anything about a glossy screen for this TV: http://www.samsung.com/africa_en/consumer/tv-audio-video/television/led-tv/UA32EH5300RXXA

Is it safe to assume it uses one? Most people seem to say that almost all LEDs use glossy panels now. I'll give Samsung a call and also go through to their store in Canal Walk. I doubt they have the older series on display though.

Well i had a choice between a plasma and LED, picked the 46" samsung led, amazing for pc gaming.

Burn in is only a problem when you the tv is static, all people have to do is ensure they never leave the plasma on the same screen for hours. Even with my LEd they say burn in could happen, i never leave my 46" on unless i am watching sport or playing games.

You should try 51" FHD plasma. ;)

No thanx, i don't like it. Length looks stupid. 46" is the perfect size for gaming and dstv, if i really want a big picture i can use my 720p projector that makes 51" seem tiny.

:D

I don't understand why you wouldn't like superior PQ.

Because i don't want such a long screen, it is my choice surely? If i don't like the length of it or look of it why should i buy it because you get a hard on every time someone mentions plasma?

46" is about perfect. Not very wide which i like and honestly my 46" led or the 51" pails in comparison to my projector. I would use the projector for gaming but it's just way too big LOL.

Then perhaps say you went LCD because of the size, when you had the choice.

Glad we agree though.

And do take a look at Roman's pics of 46" vs 51", still as big a difference as you're making it out to be?

I have seen this one in some shop that sells tv's can't remember the name but it has closed down in cresta.

Way too long for my liking. Like i said my LED tv is the perfect size and length for me to sit 1m away, my projector however isn't :D but that is used for sporting events and movies/series.

As mentioned it is my choice, i know you like to push people into buying plasma's because you get a hard on every time you see a thread regarding plasma's but i made a choice based on my personal preference and at the end of the day it's my money :D.

I hate those tv's that are very wide. Normally shorter than my 46" as well, so width and less height = fail for gaming in my opinion.

To each is own, but personally, I would pick a 51" TV over a 46" if I had the choice...

depends hey, if you like long shortish tv's yes, if you want more of a squareish shape then i 46" is about right for me. If you like the look and feel of it then it's all good but for me playing games 1m i don't want to have to turn my head slightly or sit further than 1m away from the screen :D. I only use it for gaming anyhow.

As you say to each their own.

Yes more people get hard ons over plasma than LCD because it's the superior PQ tech.

I'll be sitting 1.8m away and even I don't want a 51". I agree that plasma gives better picture quality, but it would seem that for FHD ones, I'll have to get something 51" and larger, at least if I want a Samsung.

'Bigger is better' doesn't always apply. I get to a stage where, as killadoob says, I have to turn my head to see the corners of the screen, and that's unpleasant. I will be getting a 51" for my theater room, in which I will be sitting 3m away from the TV, but for my bedroom, I want something around 40".

Older games will look worse on such a big screen too. I've experienced that already, moving from 20 to 27 inches.

I have the Samsung PS51D550 and it's excellent for gaming.

No one is saying the tv is bad though dude, it's just personal preference in terms of the size. The picture quality of my LED is wonderful and even if the 51" is better for me personally the 46" is a better fit.
